Hi folks - wish me luck eh?!

I start my new job today so am feeling very nervous - I hate being the 'new girl'! Hubby has been through it and both kids have had to get through the first day of school so now it's my turn....

Things seem to have moved so fast. Saw the ad Friday rang at 10am went for interview at 5pm, was offered the job on Sunday, went in and met them again on Monday, signed contract and here it is Thursday and I'm in to do my training.!

I wasn't even planning on looking for a job for a few months, so I didn't bring 'work clothes' with me - just casual stuff. So yesterday I took myself off to the shopping centre just outside Hamilton and bought some new work type togs.

I'll be working as a Medical Receptionist at the GP's Surgery just around the corner from where we're living. I've done plenty of Reception work before but will have to learn all about the Medical System in NZ and how things are charged etc. The Practise Manager was telling me that about 50% of the patients are Maori and Pacific Islanders and are some of the most under-priveliged people in the area. He described them as some of the nicest people he's ever met - he says they speak from the heart and can sometimes be a bit rough! I hope I can fit in - I tend to be a bit shy with people until I get to know them so I hope that doesn't come over as me being a stiff @rsed brit! :0)

Oh well I'll be myself and see how that goes down - if that doesn't work I'll have to see about getting a personality transplant! Ha Ha!!

Wish me luck and I'll let you know how the day's gone when I get home.

Hi folks

Well the first day is done thank goodness. It went really well - everyone was very friendly and there is a nice mix of nationalities so I'm not the odd one out!!

It seems a really nice place to work - we had a staff meeting at lunchtime and I was introduced to everyone and was then asked to tell them all about myself which made me feel a bit better - getting it all over and done with at once was better than having to tell everyone individually.

I spent most of my time shadowing the receptionist who has been there the longest - she made me answer the phone and even set me loose on the computer appointments system which I considered very brave of her! Luckily I didn't cause any damage or wipe anybody off the system so they're going to let me go back tomorrow for another go hee hee !

There's an awful lot to learn but I really think that I'm going to love it when I'm settled and know what I'm doing.

Thanks for all your kind messages of support - it's nice to know you're out there :o)

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

Alison

(ps. I've just spent the last hour on the phone to my Mum and Dad and we've laughed and chatted just like we're only streets apart, not oceans - so all in all I've had a crackin day!)
