Hello there!
Ok here I am again. The only thing is that now i am the one posting the thread and asking for all the help i can get from all you.
I have been in NZ now for a year and currently i'm living in Glenfield, North Shore Auckland, I like it here but at the moment i am renting as i dont have the money enough to buy a house with my husband here...Things got hard for us after i injured myself at work and the constant bills from the doctors and all that...Ok Ok here is the real thread...We are planning to move south Wairarapa or wellington area more likely and we will love to know what places are the best in each area to live and with a reasonable price on properties...In our plans are Masterton, Carteton, Featherston, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt etc, bust most likely all the places just mention the problem is that we do not know what neighborhoods are good... I want a place where i can feel secure and have a friendly neighborhood if possible.
Thank you all in advance for the help!
Your mexican friend,

Really depends on where you'll be going to work and how far you want to travel :)
The nice parts of Lower Hutt can be pricey and some parts can flood, can't tell you which ones because we've never looked there. Just know this from asking people and keeping our eye on the property prices.
Parts of Upper Hutt are lovely other parts aren't so great. Pinehaven, Silverstream, Heretaunga are probably the nicest parts. Pinehaven stills has relatively cheap property prices. Someone else here on the forum should be able to tell you some more good suburbs.
We're out in Featherston and it's lovely. The town is on the way up in the property prices but you can still get a lovely sized house and section for not a lot of money. You don't really have to worry about neighbourhoods, it's a small town but the railway station side of town is probably better to look at asthectically (sp). Since being here since July last year we've a huge network of friends, who we can call friends and everyone is very willing to help out when we're in mess. We do have three kids which may be the reason why we've got to know so many people. My husband travels on the train everyday and knows quite a few people on there, many dads of mums I know :D
Carterton is also on the way up at the moment. Bigger than Featherston but further into Wellington. Hopefully Avalon won't mind me saying she's probably the better person to ask about Carterton as she lives outside of it.
Masterton is the biggest town, lots of suburbs and still lots of decently priced property. Loads of shops, Pak'n'Save due to open within the next six months (I think, definitely by the end of the year). Not sure of the good and bad suburbs.
Hope this helps a littel. If you need any more help, PM me :D

Hello Adriana! I live in Glenfield too and don't know many people in NZ yet. Perhaps we can meet when I get back from the States around April 21. Plus I would love to find out if you have been able to find any sources for mexican ingredients/food. Tomatillo salsa and black beans would make me so happy!
Sorry to hear that you will be moving but I wish you the best in that and a speedy recovery!
Cheers, Amy

Welcome to the forum! There are quite a few places around wellington that seem to fit your needs. Sizzling Badger has some very good advice above. To add to the list you can look at some of the norther subuarbs like Tawa and Whitby. Both are good areas.
Hope the recovery goes well. If you were injured at work (or anywhere else in NZ for that matter) most likley ACC should cover medical, and possibly salary losses. Did you file a claim with them?

Hi Amy!
Yes, Of course! It will be a pleasure to meet you! About the mexican products I really have not been able to find anything out of the Old the Paso products, which i really do not like, hahaha, anyways the flour tortillas i find good is the one i Believe from quality bakers i have made some burritos and simple things for my husband and he likes them, for me is ok but that is why i am seriously planning to start importing the real mexican products and start selling thm here in NZ :laugh
Thank you for your good wishes and send me a message when u come back so we can meet.

Hi Chris!!
Thanks for the good wishes and also for the area recomendations. About ACC my case got tricky, I am reciving ACC but is being a hard road, the first time i went to the especialist he did not even had me there for more than 8 minutes and send me back to work without letting me explain what tipe of work i was doing, so i needed to go back to work with the injury (APRIL) it wasn't till August (all that time just able to work part time cos of the pain) that i just could not bear with the pain that i resign in my job it was only then that i had another appointment with another especialist (September)the one did an MRI and found 2 hernias in my discs and said i could not go back to the work i was doing, so ACC is paying me so little mind i still need to do regular visits to the GP and that is 30 dlls everytime i go, it was not till recently that i learned i could have all my medications refounded and i have being waiting now 2 months for some of them to be approved (the expensive ones) i did nto get result with the second especialist apart from having 2 MRI's the second one was in January i was so sick, so now i went with another one and will be having more tests and finally decide what is going to happend, he says is more likely i will be havin fusion of my discs but needs to have more test before he decides, this last doctor did take more than 30 min with me so i am feeling like i will finally get results, this is so stressful i can not even have a walk of more than 15 min, sit down for more than 10min cos i am almost crying of the pain!
Well, I think i must stop now, if not i can be able to write an entire book :laugh
I noticed u are from LA i lived in SJ for about 5 years and have lots of family all around California, all my dad's side of the family are from there.
Have a great weekend and again thanx for your good wishes!

Adriana and Amy,
Just noticed the side note on black beans and tomatillos. In Wellington, I found black beans in the bulk goods section at the big New World near Te Papa. The New Worlds tend to serve neighborhoods, so you may find black beans in a more ethnically-diverse neighborhood store. You may also try Asian markets (raw ingredient for black bean sauce).
And they have tomatillos and all sorts of peppers (including the HOT habeneros) at Moore Wilsons in Wellington on Tory Street. The peppers tend to be seasonal, and now seems to be the time because they had tons.
In Lower Hutt, a company that makes tortilla chips (Mexicano brand) also sells frozen corn tortillas from their office and factory. They aren't as fresh and soft because they are a thick yellow corn, but I'm going to try an enchilada pie with lots of sauce.
Sorry I can't help much on the housing question. There are tons of options and lots of suburbs. We drove around for about 5 days discoving neighborhoods before we decided where to focus on living. It is really such a personal preference- I could drive quickly through and know how I felt. You might try a weekend visit to get some focus.
Good luck on your move. Teresa
