Hi chaps

Well since getting PR this week it has all got a bit serious, and after a couple of sleeps and uncontrollable grinning we are starting to make a plan, which is - put house on sale, book flights, book container, pack some stuff, sell other stuff, sell caravan 2 cars and 1 van. Does this (vague) plan make sense? And also..(deeep breath)...;

1. Is it possible to book flights for an estimated departure date and then change it later as the house sale dictates, what airlines/agents do you all reccommend, and what fees for changing dates should i expect?

2. If not then how lates can i book flights?

3. Who would you reccommend for container/shipping quotes from Nottingham to Whangarei? and do i trust them to sell me the right size container or is there a way to work out what container i need (three bed house no settees or cars)

Any ideas?????????? :confused:

If you go to John Masons website, you can work out roughly your cubic footage by putting in items of furniture.

Best bet is to get several quotes in person, and see if they all agree (either 20/40ft), although from your brief description I reckon 20ft may be too big! (we got a small 4 bed hse in 20ft and we bought everything) We used Crown (but from Scotland) no major probs

Flights, you can get flexible tickets, but they cost more... up to you really if you want to chance getting a late deal. Just be specific when you book that they have to be flexi tickets, fuly flexible tickets should not cost you anything to change.
Oh, and congrats on the PR :raebanana

Hi Charlosparky

I am waiting to hear about PR so i am looking into removals etc. My wife is in Scotland waiting for permits etc and will have Allied Pickfords for a quote soon for a 3 bed house. We have a fair amount of experience in moving about but not in an immigration kind of way. There seems to be a bit of an issue regarding the MAF ( Ministry of Agriculture). For example, checking tents, cleaning bikes etc etc. I am not sure what this means but if any one can shed a bit of light then hooray!!!

Good luck

HI Thegatehouse thanks for thar link i will check it out. i think the MAF thing is that anything fron outside- cars bikes lawnmowers etc has to be thoroughly steamcleaned, and anything new (eg flatpack furniture) has to be made to look 'used' (unwrapped for instance) or they may charge import duty as they would for a business importing new goods. - i think anyway

Didn't think that applied to household furniture and goods for personal use!

Hey Sal.

Thanks for that link. I did a quick on-line quote for our stuff and it was a lot cheaper than I had thought it would be.

We were seriously considering leaving everything behind and starting afresh, but not so sure now......

with new goods coming into the country....I am pretty sure that you would be charged duty if you had a container full of new stuff and customs and exercise became aware of it. I also seem to remember that you have to list whats in the container, not so much item by item as generally, and it would be a shame to start your new life by tangling with customs.
