Hi Everyone,

I thought I would post an update as we've finally been here a year :raebanana

We have settled down into everyday life with ease. For us the move has definitely been the right one.

My three kids just love their lives here. They have so many friends between them it's difficult to remember whose who. My eldest started school back in February and is enjoying every minute of it. He goes to a local catholic school but the religion isn't rammed down their throats, it's bought in subtly which is really nice. He's in a class of about 15 and so gets plenty of input from the teacher which is a great advantage. He's also excelling at reading which is great to see as he's really only just started in February. My middle one is at full time kindy and has settled really well. She's becoming very arty and loves painting and drawing of any kind. My youngest is finally talking more, he's just over two, and has so many friends his own age now it's just fantastic, back in the UK he had one other his own age.

My husband is enjoying his job a lot more, he was ready to pack in the IT when moving out here. It's a totally different atttitude here and more relaxed. His company put on beer tasting for them one evening last week, as the last train went to early they arranged for him to take a taxi home, not cheap at $160 :nice1 Just goes to show that they want to keep their staff happy.

And finally me. Well I've become immersed in Playcentre and Kindy committees. There's so much on I'm almost permanently out of the house. I've got a huge network of friends that I can rely on if I come unstuck, mainly kiwis as well which is what we wanted.

At home we've got a gorgeous house of our dreams and 1/2 acre garden (high maintenanace) but the kids love it. We're never really here to enjoy as there's always something on to do. But when we come home it's really easy to relax here.

We held a party last night to celebrate a year here. In all we had about 15 families, who combined have around 40 kids ! Everyone turned up, bought food and cleared up after themselves (this is what I love about kiwi life). Everyone can't help enough, we've still got a fridge full of food left over as they all bought heaps more than needed ! ! Back in the UK if we were to do this we'd probably have about two people turn up in the end and a whole heap of food that we would have bought left over.

We had never visited NZ before arriving in Wellington and for us it's been a fantastic surprise. I could have never imagined a year and a bit ago that we would have a huge network of friends, a dream home and a great lifestyle that we have today.

For anyone that's thinking of emmigrating it's a huge decision and it is leaping into the unknown. Sometimes though you've got to get out of your comfort zone and do something different it might surprise you what you might find at the other end :D

Hello,

thank you so much for your really encouraging post!
We will leave germany in about 60 days and are really excited - and also scared. We were never in NZ before - like you, and have no jobs yet.
We have a son, 11 years old and it was really good to read about your children and how brillant they manage it.
My biggest fears are language and how/if we find work, but after reading how fantastic everything turned out for you I feel a bit more brave (at least for tonight :yes )... thank you!

Good to read that you are doing so well! Good timing as well as I'm a couple of weeks away from flying to NZ (also never been there before) and starting a new life and I'm getting the jitters. Thanks! :cheers

We're really looking forward to having a postive year and look forward to posting our 2 year post :clap

Hi Juniper,

We're 'over the hill' in Featherston, Wairarapa. Unfortunately couldn't quite get what we wanted for the money in Wellington. But we still love the city and love getting on the train to spend a day there.

wow how interesting, the home i liked the most (for the money, hehe) in our online oggling was in featherston! the spa room looked heavenly...

anyway, it sounds like you have some nice neighbors and good stuff for the kiddos! do either of you commute into the city? how's the drive to the CBD?

I think I know the house you mean as there aren't that many up for sale with a spa room :D

My husband commutes into the CBD everyday by train. Takes an hour exactly. There's three trains in the morning and three in the evening, apart from Friday when there's also a late train, 9.55pm. It takes the same time driving and parking is a bit of nightmare you've also got the Rimutakas to contend with as well so it's a lot less stressful by train.

lol too bad i can't snap up the place with the spa room as that might be a taaaad bit hasty :-P although the red kitchen would have to go, hehe...

what is a rimutaka? :-O

It's the hills/mountains between Upper Hutt and Wairarapa.

You'll know what I mean when you're here and have to drive them :D

The house you mentioned has just sold again, the couple who just sold had painted the kitchen units white, looked much better. We looked at that house along with the one we're in now, ours has a couple of lounge areas where that one has just got the one, not great with three kids around.

i love hills and mountains! in fact i would have trouble living anywhere that you can't at least see some from your window. that's one of many reasons that wellington sounds preferable to auckland (pretty much flat around there, right?). i can't say i love winding roads, heh, but they are totally normal for me... sounds like featherston is definitely worth a day-trip on our research vacation! did it seem "nicer" than the hutt valley to you, or just more reasonably priced?
