Had a search on music and not come up with any answers so here goes..

What provision is there for music tuition in NZ? My kids are doing violin at the moment and Kieran, the eldest is doing his grade 3 cello exam this July.
We want to be able to continue with tuition, but wondered what provisions there are, if any, in the school curriculum. I know NZ is not the back of beyond musically (although reading the NZ idol thread did make me laugh - sounds like quality viewing, after all, the best thing about those shows is seeing the numpties who think they are gifted in some way :laugh ) but the kids school here is well up with music and we would like it to continue.

Over to you guys

Good question Steve. Matt does drum lessons at school (yes, we really are mad! :D ) and I would love for him to continue.

Drums! You are gluttons for punishment, but people may say the same for us with violins squeaking away. And with me droning away on the guitar, heaven help the poor neighbours - especially now I have the use of an amplifier and shortly have a Fender Strat to tinker with :laugh. (only borrowing it off a friend who has a collection of such pricey trinkets )

But it will be interesting to find out ...

Hi possums

I remember school music well in NZ - I grew up learning recorder - oh my poor mother & i briefly learned violin - omg i was sooooo useless - but i did stick it out for 2 years .

From what i remember - music lessons were very good for those wanting to learn an instrument . For those of special ability - the attended a local music school on a saturday morning too . I chose in the end to sing - for the cathedral of the blessed sacrament choir Christchurch NZ- i was the youngest member & sung 1st soprano - we toured Australia - ab fab & the year after the choir went to rome !!!!

there were lots of young people in the orchestra that went with the choir .

hth a little

Thanks Vicky - good info there, and that must have been one heck of an experience for you. I've always wanted to go to Rome, never gotten around to it.

Funnily enough, my kids go to Blessed Sacrament school, here in Liverpool!! Good eh?

Steve, not sure about the violin, but Hayley's school (primary) offer music lessons for brass instruments , and also the chance to be in a band. Nicola's school give music as one of their options, (not like in the Uk were you only take options in year 10) here you get to choose what subjects you want to do, apart from the obvious, English, maths etc....also Nic's friend has just been away for three days with the school to band camp!!!!
