we are thinking of buying a well-sited crappy little bach in need of major inspiration a couple hours north of auckland (a good weekender/holiday home with retirement potential). are prices crazy or is it realistic? what is $$$ range? if we buy the bach we spend less in auckland so it would be good to have info from people on the ground...

depends on where the property is, if you follow the proposed roads north of auckland you will get an idea of where value should be heading. I met with a few real estate agents, current thought is buy puhoi next, then wharworth thereafter. Basically where the road goes, so does easier traffic and then increased land value.
