Hi Folks,

I was wondering about a gray area about getting PR. We are about to submit our ITA next week, we currently have no children but we are currently trying for one.

What happens if we get PR with only ourselves on the ITA application and then we have a baby (in europe). Will we have to re-apply for the baby? I was kinda hoping we could still go to NZ and sort out the babies status when we are over there?

Also if we have the baby in NZ, then will that mean the baby automatically gets PR?

Just wondering what happens in this situation.

Cheers
Brendan

If you have PR and have baby here in NZ, they are then a citizen (that our situation)

I think you can just get baby added on once they are born if in europe, but K&CS did it so hopefully she will be along later to explain that side.

I know for sure if you have PR and if you happen to have a baby in NZ, the baby automatically gets citizenship, not PR.

I believe if u have PR n not living in NZ yet, u have to submit your baby for PR n she/he will get it straight fwd. correct me if I'm wrong

the baby just needs to be quickly checked over by your doc to make sure they are ok, then you make a quick call to the nzis and they add them to the application, no worries.

I would say though, that the quality of maternity care in Auckland was excellent

I thought the rules had changed about citizenship. It used to be that the baby just had to be born in NZ to get citizenship but now I believe the baby has to be born to at least one Kiwi parent in order to get citizenship. We are having a baby in NZ in July and my partner is a Kiwi.

I applied for residency through my partner and was in the process of trying to get pregnant through IVF...we even included this in our application as evidence of our "committed relationship" ...I just informed our case officer that it worked before they gave me my blue stickers.

Good luck with it all!

Citizenship by birth

Since 1949 most people born in New Zealand have been New Zealand citizens by birth. Exceptions are people whose parents are foreign diplomats in New Zealand. However, people born in New Zealand on or after 1 January 2006 are only New Zealand citizens if one or both of their parents are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. For citizenship purposes New Zealand includes the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau.

All births in New Zealand must be registered at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. For people born before 1 January 2006 a birth certificate showing their birth in New Zealand is generally proof that they are citizens by birth. For people born on or after 1 January 2006 their birth record and any birth certificates will show whether they are citizens by birth.

Hi Folks,

Many thanks for the replies. That sounds grand then as if I understand correctly, if we have a child in NZ (and we have PR) then the child becomes a NZ citizen.

Foolsgold,

When you said add them to the application, I assume you meant whilst the PR application was still being processed? I was more thinking about what would happen if whilst still outside NZ we get granted PR and then afterwards we have a child outside NZ.

What happens then? Can we still just add our child to our application?

Cheers

Try PM'ing K&CS - I think Kate had PR before her little one was born in the UK (if my memory serves me correctly  ). I think it was a fairly simple process to add bubs to your application.

Yes, Debs and Sal are correct. We got our PR through a week before Alex was born. All we had to do was have our own GP do a quick medical on him (it didn't cost us but that will be at your GP's discretion), then we sent off the medical report along with his passport to our CO and his passport was back within a matter of days. No hassle at all if that's the route you end up going down.

Good luck!

Kate

Just going through this myself - got PR yesterday - baby due in Sept. Our letter stated that we had until Oct 11th to get new born's passport and medical info to NZIS and it would take a couple of weeks to return to us with visa. Didn't sound like it would be a problem and they said that we just needed to keep them informed if we thought we wouldn't make the deadline (i.e. if baby was born later than expected).

Good luck and hope it works out (NZ & baby!!)
