I'm wondering how bad damage to a car body has to be before it won't pass WOF. I rubbed my Toyota van along the side of a fence post, which did an impressive amount of damage for what little impact there was (whoops). I think I'll need a new sliding side door, but as I am now in poor student mode and the van isn't worth that much, I'd rather do as little as possible.
Anyone know?

Your doors have to open and shut safely

What does the WoF inspection include?
The WoF inspection is a general safety check, and includes:
tyre condition (including tread depth)
brake operation
structural condition. (Rust is not allowed in certain areas)
lights. (Are all bulbs working? Do lights comply? (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicles/get-your-lights-right.html))
glazing. (Is your windscreen safe?)
windscreen washers and wipers
doors. (Do they open and close safely?)
safety belts. (Must not be faded or damaged; buckles must work properly)
airbags (if fitted)
speedometer. (Must be working)
steering and suspension. (Must be safe and secure)
exhaust. (There must be no leaks and the exhaust must not be too loud)
fuel system. (There must be no leaks
).

Seems a breeze compared to the UK MOT test! No emissions checks??

So why aren't the police pulling over half the hoons who feel it their right to disrupt your silence with their stupidly loud exhausts which couldn't possibly have passed a WOF?? Bah!

my partner took car for it's WOF and realised they didn't have equipment to test brakes (he's a mechanic so knows what to look for). He asked about this and the guy said he'd take it round the block and check brakes (by feel alone, and some kind of expert judgement i guess - ah well, it stops reasonably well, so brakes must be fine).
Good eh!!!

Ooo' I remember doing similar myself in the works mini bus, swung into the drive-way and caught the gate latch. Cut the van open like a can.
Hope the $$ damage isn't to much
