Thanks for the useful info on decile ratings folks. The next little detail I have been unable to find out about schools is how admission dates work in NZ. For example, here in the UK one of my sons has a birthday in mid August - which makes him one of the youngest in his year group, because the cut off point for entry to his year group is dictated by the start of the UK school year falling on Sept 1st (if he had been born in early Sept, for example, he would end up being one of the eldest in a year group).

Is this the system that works in NZ and, if so, when are the dates?

Little ones start school the day after they turn 5. Then they go up each year. There doesn't appear to be a cut off date for ages, as all classes have a wide range in each class. Also, they do accelerate gifted children, for either individual subjects, or for a whole year if appropriate.
