Hello, hope someone can advise me on this. My husband has a masters degree from Portsmouth University pre 1992. The list from NZQA recognise Qualifications from there after 1992 when it became a University (previously a Polytechnic). Can anyone advise me how or where we can confirm if his qualification counts, we wish to do this before submitting EOI, because we are trying (like everyone else) to get as many points as possible!!

Thank you

Degrees gained in polytechnics prior to them becoming universities were provided by the Council of National Academic Awards rather than the poly itself. The CNAA is on the list of recognised institutions for the dates 1964 to 1992.
Both myself and OH have our degrees from Portsmouth so was quite relieved when I tracked this down.

Try to apply for pre-assessment of qualification. It costs NZ$70, and you can do it online or send it per fax. The results can be obtained after 10 working days. So you can get sure if the qualifications of your husband are recognized.

Good luck

Relieved to have found this again as my degree is from Sheffield Poly. So OK its on the list of recognised institutions but do I still need to send off with evidence that I studied there, dates and final mark etc. Sheffield Poly have already told me they can't provide a transcript so will a letter from the newly named Uni be acceptable ? My degree is not related at all to my work(teaching) nor relevant to any job I will be hoping to get in NZ. Do I need to get it assessed?

Hi Carey,

I'm afraid I don't know - We found that we didn't need to claim the points for the MSc, so haven't gone down that route.

good luck

Bumping this up myself (hope that's allowed?) as I'm drawing a blank with getting evidence from my old polytechnic becasue the degree I studied doesn't exist anymore and the archives can't be accessed apparently. They have said they'll send me a letter of verification but can do no more. Surely NZQA will want more than this? Or as its not related to teaching, is it necessary anyway?

You could also contact the Open Uni since they hold the CNAA records.

They can't give you the transcript, but they could verify that you passed whatever degree it is and when you did this. Every little bit helps...
