We want to fly directly from San Francisco to Auckland which means we have to fly with Air NZ. They often have special deals on return tickets, but does anyone know if the price of one-way tickets drops accordingly? What have people been paying for one-way tickets from the US lately? (if you don't mind me asking.)

We flew AirNZ one way from LA. We had to fly on a certain day because we booked the dog first, but it was only a little more than 1/2 of the one way specials. We paid $555US to fly in March and booked 5 weeks before our flight.
Hope that helps.

Here are some things you may try to get good deals.
Rattravel sometimes has amazing deals and they post them on the travel section of the news paper, Also some websites....www.treckerstravel.com www.lowestravel.com and www.travelocity.com
Good luck and God bless!

Maybe check for code shares: Try Air Canada, they often have a better deal on ANZ than ANZ.
Shop the big volume places as well (Fight Centre and United) and make them work for their money.
Also, if you are SAF --> AKL only, get someone in the US get your ticket for you, their tickets are often discounted more, even after ecxhange, and a single hop can be slighty more than a return fare.
Last but not least, check out Air Tahiti Nui, they stop in Tahiti, however if the connecting flight is next day they will give you a really cheap room in Tahiti for the night if you ask for it !!
Cheers

Thanks for the info. Being limited to one airline means we can't shop around for good prices - the travel websites all come back a lot more expensive than the Air NZ website, which is giving me one-way prices for October of $570 - $600 (incl. tax). We've got plenty of time to wait and see if there are any specials, it's that same dilemma everyone has, buy now, or wait for a special deal and worry that prices will go up instead...

We paid $140 to Hawaii, spent a week on the Big Island, and then $400 to Sydney, through Hawaiian Air. We then got a cheap Freedom Air flight direct to New Zealand! I believe Air New Zealand flies from Honolulu to Auckland direct on Wednesdays (not sure of the fare). We figured it was a great excuse to travel a bit on our journey over :)
