Hi all. We're planning to move there ASAP with our two children and would love to know the Good, the Bad and the Ugly from anyone who lives in the area. Thanks in advance :)

Somewhere within an easy commute of Hastings I think. Ideally we would live semi-rurally/rurally but that rather depends upon house/rental prices.

Waipukurau is where we are heading. A rural town that services the local farming industry. We love it! :D About 30/40 min drive from Hastings. House prices are reasonable as well.

I love central hawkes bay and live in Otane. I came here 6 months ago and have never looked back since. Takes me 30mins to get to hastings for work and hardly any traffic with wonderfull views especially when the sun is coming up over the hills! Waipukurau is a small town and you can get just about everything you need there and Waipawa is smaller. Beaches are about 30 or 40 mins away and wonderfull countryside all around.

Like the look of the area but it doesn't look like there is much work in my line there :(
Still, sure to pay a visit at some time :))

Hawkes Bay is simply a lovely place, 7 months down the road and I still love being here.
If you have a technical profession then there is little in the way of opportunity here (StevieD hit the nail on the head there!), trades and health professionals seem to have great opportunities.
A multinational engineering company stopped operating here around a year ago, leaving a surplus of hardware/software engineers. The thing is, it’s such a lovely place that people are really reluctant to move on. I know of at least one blue chip company in NZ that is actively recruiting engineers out of the Bay (the question is will the engineers leave), they keep running ads in the local paper, but I have met a few engineers who have switched profession to stay (civil engineering is alive and kicking here so I’m not talking about them)
The kiwi attitude to the region is funny too, I met a kiwi in Auckland who had the distinct impression that there was nothing here, an idea he had from childhood holidays 25 years ago.
Hawkes bay is separated by a mountain range which I understand helps to provide the wonderful weather here but makes for a difficult drive to get to the rest of the island.
Housing now that’s a confusing subject in itself, Napier and Hastings are relatively close to one another, if you want to live right between the cities (Clive) then $400,000 is a reasonable budget for a house (and it’s a wonderfully small, old village but still has shops, bars and cafes oh and you can get to either city centre in under 10 mins) . Havelock North was once the hotspot (and is a really nice place) but Hastings is growing and encroaching on the once village making it a suburban commute to Hastings, and a fair drive to Napier, still it’s an expensive place to buy a house (but as I said a nice place).
If you know which city you will be working in and are prepared for a 40min commute, then you can get a real bargain of a house. The kiwis don’t seem place a premium on a house if you have to drive 40 mins to get to the nearest city. Lets face it most people in the UK could only dream of a huge house, a big plot of land, 40 mins drive from the city. You’d have to be pretty well off to afford that, here you can half your budget for the inconvenience!
Quite honestly I’m trying to be sceptical about the place but the worst thing I can say is I’ve seen a few hoodies in Hastings, there are too many traffic wardens in Napier and you cant swim in the ocean in Napier (but I sort of lke the ocean there, it’s kind of dramatic!)

:) Thanks Bob :)
$400000 is out of our league, Dh is a mental health nurse and I'm at home with the littlest (planning teacher training in a couple of years), so we're thinking more of the 40 min commute, an acre or so of garden variety of housing, which is our dream and utterly unacheivable here in the UK. If RealENZ is reliable, I think we'll be able to acheive that for significantly less then $400000!
We've chosen Hawkes Bay for many reasons (sunshine hours being fairly low on the list, a bonus but not essential) and I feel pretty confident about it, but it's good to get positive feedback because I've had some negative, although that's been from a couple I know who are hardened big-city lovers, so I didn't really relate to their complaints, iyswim. We're waiting for a reply from a job my husband has applied to in Hastings.
Thanks for your reply, it was very encouraging :)
A few hoodies, a handful of traffic wardens and some choppy sea isn't going to put me off :D

Dramatic??!! - Mika (8 years my middle son) went for a paddle there and was knocked off his feet the waves were so strong, came up with pockets full of shingle and stones!!!
Think Dramatic is an understatement!! ;)

Who wants to go in the sea anyway - brrrrrrr. Seas are for sailing on, of snorkelling in nice tropical seas.
I not really a beach lover, don't mind walking on them, but lazing about and getting covered in sand is not my idea of a good time. I can just see poor little Mika getting a tumbling in the surf aaaahhhhh
