Ok here it goes. This morning I received the news that the company in NZ wants to hire me, wooooohooooooo.... :raebanana , and they want me to start asap, preferably 1 December. And that could be a problem.
I've been working for more than 5 years for the same company now so the notice period would be 3 months. However, usually this period is determined in agreement with the employer, so 6 weeks should be feasible I hope. Another problem is that I don't want to give notice until my visa application has come through, and I haven't even submitted it yet. I have all the documents, the offer will follow later this week, so I should be able to submit it by friday. Probably an old question. How soon can I get the work visa? Another question, should I risk already giving notice at my current job while waiting for the work visa???
I really want to handle this carefully on both sides, but I definitely don't want to scare off the company in NZ. Does anybody have some advice? Thanks :cheers

Hi,
were do you need to send your visa application to? Sometimes it speeds up the process if you can deliver the paperwork yourself or at least talk to the officer and explain why it is so urgent.
I have told my employer, that I want to leave within the next 6 month, told him I could not be precise, as I just got selected (EOI), but have no job offer, so it can take quite a while now. He understood, so I was lucky. But I don't know if this is always the best way to do it.
Best luck

I will have to submit it to the NZ embassy in Brussels. I've already been asking a lot of questions to a visa officer there and explained that the company in NZ wants me to start asap in NZ, and she told me to drop off the application to save the posting time. This does not speed up the application though. The only thing I could to is to collect the visa in person and be as complete as possible with my documents.

A general work visa to start with. It's my intention to apply for residence in NZ after I've build up some NZ work experience. Lifts the points methinks...
I'm sorry I didn't respond to your message a while ago veronica. Nice to hear that things are moving in the right direction with the hostel as well :nice1

I thonk they would understand if you said you could not be here until the New Year personally! You will have a lot to do and a bit of breathing space is only sensible. If they want you that badly then they will wait for you! There is a skills shortage generally and so good people are hard to come by. In you sistuation a would pick up the phone and discuss it....bottom line is if you cant get your visa application through you wont be ablr to come anyway until thats sorted, also flights will be expensive, unless that is you travel on Xmas Day when I believe (so I have heard) that flights are comparitively cheap for obvious reasons.

If its just a general work visa you might find it quicker to come over here and get it where is the job located. Thanks for the wishes on the hostel. its coming together but now we are having to do the red tape/ fire regs type of thing so its going slowly.

I've received the job offer letter today in my mailbox. They're going to fax the signed one again tomorrow, and it says that they would prefer me to start 1 December but no later than 1 January. So I hope I can sort things out at my current job regards the notice period. 2 months should be feasible I reckon, although I'm going to try for mid December.
I've already sent the offer to someone at the embassy (who's been very helpful by the way) and she told me it can take up to 21 days for the visa to come through, so that shouldn't be a problem I guess. But I still need the approval in principle or evidence that they tried to hire someone from NZ before I can apply. I asked the employer if he could provide this.
Let's hope that doesn't take very long. Things are definitely moving in the right direction

Thanks everyone. Well I've talked to my employer today and he's not going to stand in my way and will let me go to NZ before the end of the year :clap
He was very understanding that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The only thing now standing in my way I guess is the Work Visa, but I have the feeling that won't be a problem. My job is on the Occupational Shortages list and above that the company in NZ will produce a letter saying that they've done effort to hire someone locally, but without any success.
Only two months left, still can't believe it....

Hi Feeble
I may have got this wrong, but, My hubbys job was on the OSL, and I thought that if that was the case your employer did not have to prove that they could not hire a New Zealander, cause that was the reason for the job being on the OSL?
The very best of luck, by the way. We love Christchurch :nice1

I think you're right, but I don't think it can hurt to provide all of that proof. :cheers
