Hi
Has anyone got any info on if your allowed to ship a car over to N.Z. on a work visa, and if so do you have any import charge's due to not haveing a PR,
As if we have to wait until we've got PR we'll probably put it up for sale before we travel and go for buying one there.
Cheer's :nice1

I would assume its the same as bringing over any personal stuff in a container, if you have a 2 yr work visa or pr you can do it without being taxed/charged extra.

Check out http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/importing/ to see if you car can come over.

As Sal says above check out the ltsa site first - if your car is not on the frontal impact regs approved list forget it. Similarly for more recent cars (manufactured after Jan 1st 1990 - note that date of 1st registration is not the same thing - a car registered in say march 1990 may have been manufactured in 1989) you may need to get a compliance statement from the manufacturer which can cost - may make it uneconomic for cheaper recent cars compared to the cost of selling in UK and buying same here.

Economically it only seems to make sense for older cars that are of high value. Buy the time you add shipping costs - depending upon how you do it could be about £1700 if in it's own 20' container plus the GST on the purchase price if you have owned it for less than 12 months plus an extra say $600NZ to get it mAF inspected, import inspected and registered. It's cheaper to just by the same car here. Check out www.trademe.co.nz for indicative prices of s/h cars here.

If I had to generalise I would say that it is only economically viable to personally import high value european cars that you have owned for over a year.

Hope this helps

Just had a quick look our's is a 2004 Peugeot 206sw and if we sell it now we'll be lucky to get £6,500/£7,000 but if we don't bring it over the same car/age would cost around £9,000 to replace  .
so as you see if we can bring it over on a work visa it's worth our while to do so :nice1

As Jon says check out second hand prices. Add up your shipping, MAF fees etc. You also have to sign a customs form agreeing to keep it for 2 years or you will have to pay the GST at 12.5% on it's shipping date value.

Then add in transport or rental car cost for the 8 weeks yours takes to ship over. Plus trailer costs from the port to your house.

Then add at least 10% buffer for extra MAF steam cleaning, vacuming, we got the quote wrong fee and any other old fee that they can think of. Also if your car is damaged (seriously) while being shipped it will be off road whilst being repaired and will take longer for the VTNZ to clear it.

Plus rego and wof, brake certification, (even though you have a compliance cert). :uhoh

Yep after reading the forum on this subject we decided to sell our Nissan terrano 03 plate....we got £9,500 for it, and we can replace it with a similar model...ok not as new, but NZ cars are in better condition because of the better road conditions - no salt? or so my OH says....for half the price, so I get to have one too... :clap

so I concur I wouldn't bother - its too much hassle

but you have to decide yourself...

Cool move terranibles don't have a good reputation here due to earlier models propensity to rust between the double skin rear floor pan.

As baboon world says no salt on the roads - cars here don't deteriorate like Uk cars. Even Morris 1100s can still be seen on the roads here when did yu last see one of those in the UK.

As I said earlier - work out what it will cost to replace the car here, ensure that it will be allowed into the country, and work out what it will cost to get it here. Shipping,Duty,MAF,Regsitration,Compliance....

Then decide if you want to bring it.

Or alternatively just have a look at car prices here and decide that a change would be a good idea anyway and buy when you get here.

Hi JonSE....saw your reply, we were going to get a 4x4 in NZ when we arrive...if nissans have a terrible rep, I would appreciate some recomendations, for us to look at as a replacement, we'd seen the Nissan Minstral that looked alot like our Terrano?

Look forward to seeing replies......

Mistral/Terrano rust out the floor panels as mentioned above, you cannot patch repair them either. some models can be repaired and fitted with a load bar to support the seat belt anchors or you have to have a whole new floor panel fitted. either way its aprox $2000

this is in NZ where there is no salt used on the roads and still they rust.

personally i would avoid them just because of the risk

I decided to bring my multipla with me. I got a 40ft container instead of the 20ft I was having which cost 1,600 extra. I paid about $600 when it got here. I was given a rental car to use for the first 2 weeks when i arrived and during that time I picked up an old banger for $700 to use while i waited for my multipla. I sold the banger for the same price I paid for it and it served me well. I have a colleague at work whom has just come over whom also had a multipla which he sold before he came and he really regrets it. I would of never of brought the same here for the extra I paid to bring it and would of lost out on selling it before I came. I can get parts for it and instead of people laughing at me in the UK they love my car here!

On balance I will probably bring the Yogimobile, it's a Volvo S60 which I love dearly. Volvos are impossible expensive to buy in NZ and it's the most comfortable car I've ever had (as I am quite ample in all directions).

Will probably sell Mrs Yogi's wheels before we go (Vauxhall Astra) and may look to replace it with a similar sized car or more likely perhaps one a little bigger when we arrive.

Cheers,

Yogi.

PS. Does anyone run a Prado or an Legacy estate in NZ?

A quick survey of www.trademe.co.nz and www.autotrader.co.uk suggests that S60s may well be cheaper here than in the UK. Do a vary careful read of the LTSA website for the hoops and $$$ you may have to jump through to get the S60 here, legally on the road.

Despite the fact that we've owned a LandRover Discovery for the last year or so (Bought 14 months ago sold last week - lost $500 NZ - not bad for a years motoring especially given that petrol has increased from $1.15/L to $1.85/L in that time - a fact not to be taken lightly when a V8 Disco does about 15mpg) I'ld probably recommend you look at Toyota Hilux Surf. Probably more of them here than any other 4x4 hence more garages are familiar with them and spares are cheaper due to emough numbers to ensure some competition. (Not the case with the less numerous vehicles) A lot depends upon why you want or need a 4x4?
Far be it from me to preach (I'm not in a position to do so being a serial 4x4 owner) but one has to question why you need/want a 4x4?

Yogi ,

I have a Legacy Estate ,bought at turners car auction in Auckland .

No point asking me any questions about it ,I drive it ,put petrol in and cleaned it once :roll

But ask anything and I'll get my hubby to give you the answers.

We owned one because its easier for pulling horse boxes, going on grass etc, I have a normal banger for around town, but Rob misses the height and drive of a 4x4 - plus I want a horse and he wants something that can carry tools/gear for work....we may even get a ute! :laugh

only 3 weeks to go till we can look around for one!

Sounds like a good enough reason to me. Can't remember where you're headed when you get here but if it's the auckland area it's worthwhile checking out the secondhand car fair at Ellerslie racecourse on a Saturday morning. Lots of cars worthwhile missing but you could strike it lucky and find someone in a hurry to sell something good because they are emigrating or similar. Prepurchase mechanical inspections (about $150nZ) and the NZ equivalent of an HPI check about $30NZ (make sure it's not stolen or on HP or previously written off) are available on site and should you go armed with cash you can transfer ownership and register the car in your name as well.
