Hello,
Any Americans out there making the move in the next few months??
I am here in NZ and the hubby is still in the states packing up and selling the house.

We hope to have the house sold and everything ready to send over in June.
The dogs are definately coming in JUNE!! All booked at the quarentine facility, and the Pet Import Permit came this week! :clap

STUFF! We don't have much, and haven't figured out whether we'll need a 20 ft container, or to share a container.....or just ship boxes.
Anybody out there close to moving that might be able to share container (or simply information and advice)???

Don't use Allied movers. I have moved a lot over the years and this was the worse move EVER! Details are posted on another thread but just don't use them.

We went with Rainier. Not the cheapest, but hopefully our stuff will arrive. There are a lot of shady movers out there - be careful. We had about 400 ft^3, less than a 20ft container, and they charged us by the cubic foot. So far they've been pretty good. They packed our stuff in NJ on March 7th. It was supposed to go on a boat in LA on April 14th and arrive in Auckland on May 30th. That's a lot longer than we had hoped, but I think part of the delay was that we had less than a full container.

We didn't have a lot of money to spend on the move, nor do we now have a lot of money to spend on buying new stuff. Yes things are really really expensive here, so maybe we would have been better off moving more with a full container. We've had to buy a lot of stuff, but since we have such a long wait for our stuff, it means we actually have things to sit on, and cook with, etc. We've also been pretty motivated to find good deals here. We made our first trademe purchases yesterday. We've also been to some garage sales. There are good deals to be had, you just have to be patient, which isn't always possible when all you have is two suitcases.

Yes, our stuff finally arrived on March 16. Conveniently, I was back in the US finishing some stuff up with the sale of the house and my business etc. My partner, Andy, scored huge point by doing a lot of the unpacking. So, when I arrived back to NZ on Friday I walked into our house with all of our stuff. It made me feel at home. I still have stuff to unpack but he did a lot. I have to say that so far there has been very little damage...the good news to this whole ordeal.
