Just been a fantastic little snippet on BBC about the Takahoes, endangered birds in NZ, and the fantastic efforts of little Sophie Smith, a young schoolgirl who took it on herself to write to all and sundry, gaining recognition. Ended up getting £50,000 off a "top" NZ DIY chain. Set up preservation project and breeding programme.
It was nice to see, what started as a school project turning in to a national campaign! So, if you happen to see the appeal on your travels, drop a few cents in the bucket - it really is a worthwhile cause :nice1

And to think someone on the forum once said "the NZ kids have no go in them".
Now there's a kid who challenges THAT stereotype!!!! Good on 'er!!

It was a brilliant little item, on kids BBC programme, the country looked fantastic, and the little girl - marvellous. She shamed the adults into getting something done. Only 200 of the birds left when she took action. Now there are reserves, proper breeding programmes (she attends regularly to feed the chicks with a "puppet" on her hand, with little speakers in with the mum's call to soothe the chicks). All in all. a well adjusted, level headed girl who is doing a fantastic thing for an endangered species. Get the feeling she is going to go far!
