I did a search for this, but couln't find any threads that seem to deal with my query, which is: does recognized work experience have to be in the same skilled occupation? I originally qualified as a teacher and taught for 9 years. Then I did a graduate conversion course for IT and have been in IT for a bit under 6 years. If I just use the IT experience in the recognized work experience I get to 120 points, but if I add in the Teaching experience I get to 135 points.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ian

Hi there,

If your claiming for IT as your 'skill' ie: that's what your degree is and it's on the shortages list, you can only claim for relevant IT experience.

Likewise if you were going down the teaching route.... you'd only be able to claim for teaching experience relevant to your teaching degree.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks, that is very useful. From the qualifications perspective I could down either the IT route or the teaching route. I am not sure if the teaching route is open to me as the teaching finished nearly 7 years ago: would I have to get registration? maybe some secondary teachers on the forum could let me know if they had to register as teachers before their experience counted for 'absolute shortage' bonus points. If I could use the teaching experience and qualification that would be great.

Cheers for your help.
