LOL
just replying to myself .......
We've chosen out of town - we fancy the Hurinui district of canterbury - we want to be as self supporting as possible & have chooks , grow fruit &veg , make jam , perhaps even a wee piggie or a sheep or two - lol yes I am in a fantasy world !!!
Initially we will go to Christchurch - but north Canterbury is the master plan !

wellington - we're recently back from a week recce trip there & have finally made the big decision to list the house and move as soon as we can sell it
We chose welly partly for work since my OH is in IT and partly because we love the mix of the arts/music/restaurant/cafe life in close proximity to lots of beautiful reserves and beaches. Our fav. neighborhoods were Island Bay and the Khandallah-Ngaio area (though I'm sure we'll start out renting wherever we can find a place that will take our two dogs!). Wadestown looked nice too, but SO hilly - I think I saw my life pass in front of me several times when we were driving around dodging parked cars and downhill drivers.

We're off to Palmerston North for a couple of reasons:
1 It's where our family are
2 It's where the RNZAF is (hubby's job)
3 It's where Provenco is (my job) :D
Zippity dooo dah!
Oops, mis-read that!
I think I'd still go to the Manawatu, but closer to the beach :D

Welly for us! I usually prefer the country, but I really like Wellington! The harbour and the arts... The Deluxe Cafe and Chocolate fish... We planned to live nearby, but our house is still on the market in the US so we faced reality (sort of) and went to a cheaper rental on the Kapiti Coast, an hour and 15 minutes away. But hey we are living in a cute house at the Beach for Cheap! The plan is to eventually move closer to the city. With gas hitting 1.70 a litre yesterday, I can't drive into Welly much from here. Got a contract on our house today(!!!) so we could move closer to Welly later. Fingers crossed.

to quote you vic, I was hovering between your choice and Chch, but I have to consider my boys, and with them due to start Uni etc, we will need to be nearer the city than the boonies to start....which part I have no idea but I am sure going to enjoy the next 3mths finding out :raebanana :raebanana before the boys come in Sept.

The two areas I've put on my "approved" list are Marlborough and Wairarapa. Both fairly sunny (Marlborough more so) and neither area has any traffic lights :laugh

Public transport??
This is why we are going 3mth before them, so we can do a lot of chillin ahemmmmmmm I mean - research ;) before they arrive (they are expecting to move into a home with broadband etc when they land!)
I haven't read into much of the areas.....other things are more pressing at the minute, but you comments would be welcomed, as I am making a list of towns to look at...

Wairarapa (population of the whole valley somewhere around 30000) has a lot of people who work in Wellington and there are commuter trains. Massey University is in Palmerston North, but that's a couple of hours from most of Wairarapa I think. And of course there is Victoria University of Wellington, probably at least and hour and half by car or train.
Not much in the way of public transport in Marlborough (population somewhere around 40000) execpt for the once a day trains that runs between Picton and Christchurch and have a stop in Blenheim. The closest University that I know of is way down in Christchurch.

MMmmm then My itinerary is ok....Auckland/Bay of plenty for holiday & possible scouting area, (but we probably couldnt afford to live there)
Down to Palmerston Nth, Welly, accross by ferry and then to Chch and then look at the other areas from there. (hubby had an offer in Dunedin as well...so I said we could look there just for curiosity ;) ) But Chch area is my fav choice.
ta for answering

Wairarapa and Nelson. Wairarapa because its only 1 1/2 drive from Wellington and you get a lot more house for your $ and Nelson will be looked at just so we can say we have looked! If I had loads of $$$ though it would be a big house on the North Shaw over looking Stanmore Bay...............Memo to me....remember to keep buying loto tickets!!!!!!!!!
