Yes - it's quite a formal ceremony and yes you do have to swear allegience to HM
funny eh?
The only other part of the ceremony we took part in was to go to the pub and drink copious amounts of alcohol!
Great night we had.

Actually yes it does - make me feel different.
It's a funny thing....... like I suddenly have rights I didn't have before.
THe kids at my school and the staff have been lovely.
I got the most gorgeous bunch of red roses.......
And I feature quite highly in the newsletter.
All 4 of us did it. Me Kenny and the boys.
It took 8 months of paperwork and around $1600 for the 4 of us.

Sorry I know I should be able to find this elsewhere, but what rights do you suddenly have, apart from being able to go to Oz.
Are you able to keep you UK citizenship as well.
Congratulations again.

Nothing much Debbie - but we can now have a NZ passport as well as our UK one - we will have dual citizenship.
It's just a feeling - sort of "belonging"
I know that is ridiculous to say after living here for 10 years - but it's true.
Like I suddenly have the same rights as anyone else here.
So they can stuff their opinions about 'poms" where the sun don't shine.
It's not everyone - just the odd one or two.
And I dont let it get to me generally........
But.... it STILL is a better feeling!

I know what you mean about feeling different, when I got my US citizenship, I just felt a lot more secure somehow. It's only a piece of paper but it really does make a difference.
Congratulations!!!

Hi Carol
I don't know if you're still active on this forum, but I was wondering i you could tell me how long the citizenship application took? - I need to get it sorted so I can apply for a full student loan but it seems like a huge delay at the moment!

hi cabbage - as someone pointed out on the other thread you posted on - if you have permanent residence (which i assume you do to become a citizen) then you are already eligible for a student loan.

hi cabbage - as someone pointed out on the other thread you posted on - if you have permanent residence (which i assume you do to become a citizen) then you are already eligible for a student loan.
and if you have been in the country for more than 2 yrs then you could also qualify for a student allowance(do not have to pay this back)
we can't claim it for Jason but we can get a loan - he has borrowed enough to pay the costs of books etc, but has decided not to claim for living costs( he was entitled to claim up to $150 a week) but when looking at the figure at the end of the year ($8,000+) at the age of 16 he decided to say no!) he has $1550,00 debt now
Hope that helps
