Okay, now I'm wondering about fees involved. Do New Zealanders tend to get home buyers surveys? How about solicitors fees and estage agent fees etc?

As my husband is now applying for a job and (fingers crossed) we will make it for November, I need to start putting some thought into allocation of our savings, as I seriously doubt we'll be able to save for a deposit etc on NZ nurse wages.

Such a boring request, I know, so thanks to anyone who replies in advance!

We do not pay Estate Agent fee for buying a house (unless selling).

We paid $1150 for solicitor fee when we bought a new build from the developer and $500 for valuation report (the bank required this for mortgage loan).
For us, basically these are the only 2 expenses for buying a house here.

For buying an existing home, you need to have a LIM report on top of it.
Have a look at this link about LIM report and its cost : http://www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/planning/build/lim.htm

Just going through the process now. The solicitors fees are $820 GST included, the builders survey is $430 and we are having a council building records inspection $185 on top of that. We were going to have a LIM report done ($300) but were advised against it by our solicitoer as Johnsonville joined Wellington City Council in the 50's and apparently lots of land documents 'disappeared'- he said that in his 30 years of conveyancing he had only had two reports that returned anything. He was actually quite passionate about this and also said for peace of mind that you can request the information yourself if you go into to the office (charge $25)

Hope this helps, of course it all depends WHERE you are moving in NZ.

These were our fees for purchase:

Solicitor: $877 (misc fees for title checks, solicitor services, etc., discount on solicitor if you use related mortgage broker)

Valuation: $515 (professional estimate of house value, given that we had no clue how much houses are worth here, they rarely advertise house prices, but do tender and auctions)

Home Inspection: $410

LIM (land and building records): $300 (we didn't do this because I checked records myself, and it would have taken alot longer than our purchase contract allowed, copied records for $40 approx.)
