My partner did all the car stuff before I arrived but we are insured through State and the cost was pretty reasonable. They also do our renter's insurance as well.

We're both with AMI.

We went through State. Bought insurance over the phone while at the car dealership. Asked a few questions, and that was it. He was extremely nice. We got full coverage for $450/yr NZD. Includes roadside assistance and windscreen. No deductible unless we were at fault or the other person is unknown, in which case $375.
The car dealer mentioned that almost everyone goes through State or AMI. We were offered the cards for both, and ended up with State.

worth pointing out that there is no legal requirement to have car insurance, around a third of all nz drivers simply don't bother

We also went through State and after having to claim due to an accident we're really happy with their service and costs - accident on a Saturday (our fault), car assessed and written off Tues/Wed and $$$ transferred to bank Friday pm.

We insured our car through the bank [HSBC],did it over the phone ,didn't need to show any no claims .
It was quick ,easy and sorted without any hassle as it was done in our first few days .I'm sure when it comes for renewal we will look around a little first .

We've got AMI and are very happy so far. I wrecked just hours after opening my policy (even before I had paid a premium). The accident was my fault, but AMI took the claim and paid for everything; I was back on the road with a loaner from the panelbeater in about an hour and a half. I won't lose my no-claims bonus (60% discount) until next year (down to 40% discount). I think my premium is around $750/year for comprehensive coverage on a brand new 1500cc, $41k car. Excess is $1000, which is the best you can do without a NZ driver's license.
State was slightly cheaper but will only pay market value for your car. AA and AMI will pay agreed value, which means that if you total your car, they give you a pre-set amount; you do not have to haggle with them after the fact like you do with companies that will only pay market value.
As an aside, both my towie and my panelbeater said that AMI was the best (panelbeater was AMI recommended, so he may be biased).
Check out www.consumer.org.nz for more details; they recently did a review on auto insurance. You will have to search and you may have to subscribe, but have a look anyway.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hang on..................is this Cardy who missed the brake pedal one time?;):laugh:p
State,
cheapest for us after lots of research,
no excess for UK licenses,
didn't require proof of no claims even though I had it all,
do our contents too with a discount. :nice1

Not in our case - we had a pre-agreed value which was paid in full, and we are with State.
