Is it imported halfway across the world? Might push up the price - not sure what import taxes etc they slap on foodstuffs... and if demand isn't high that could affect buying price... and I guess it could be seen as a luxury item as it's foreign/exotic in these parts and so they can whack a premium on it...
If it's made in NZ and it's being called Red Leicester then I've no clue except perhaps branding, target pommie audience or novelty value!
We're both cheese lovers - stronger the better - and were gobsmacked by the prices. Even Barry's Bay cheese (made locally in, errr, Barry's Bay near Akaroa!) is relatively expensive (but gorgeous)!
I bought a large-ish chunk of parmesan a while back from New World, the proper stuff imported from Italy (parm reggiano) so I was prepared for it to be dear, and the woman at the counter apologised profusely for it being mis-priced - it wasn't (the wedge cost $18) - and she just stared and said "you'd pay THAT for cheese!" ....
Each to their own!
Oh and for the person who asked me where they could get proscuitto in Chch (Kate?) I've finally found some decent stuff - in the Fendalton New World at the butchery counter. :nice1

I agree it does seem expensive. The Kapiti Coast 'imports' are but so yummy though.
I've found that Moore Wilsons is a little more reasonable on the price. But TBH as a cheese lover I don't care. :p
Haven't seen Red Leicester though. Must try harder. :roll
