I'm sure all of us who are already here love to help out the newbies arriving from wherever they are in the world, and I know of many peeps in the Chch area who would be willing to lend basic gear to arrivals to help them thru the first few weeks.

Is it worth co-ordinating this so that a "set" can be picked up or delivered on arrival?

I have an iron/board/kettle/mugs/oil heater that I could contribute - all stuff we bought from Warehouse when we arrived (duplicates) and now in the garage - basic but does the job. Someone else might have a spare telly, blow up beds or cutlery?

Just a thought - I know it would have helped us in the beginning.

Anyone else want to help out in the Chch area - or get one going in your own area?

Brilliant idea. ;)

I would have loved something like this when we arrived. Also helps get to meet people, share experiences.

My stuff is all out on loan at the moment, but I'd be happy to help out or co-ordinate one in Welly.

I'd also though of writing a little fact pack, shops are here, buy phone cards from there, recommend a friend to Sky get $30 off each bill kinda thing. I also had some vouchers give to me from the appliance rental place which I gave away too.

Fantastic idea :nice1 I know that we would really appreciate that sort of help when we arrive in Welly in October and would really love to help people out once we have settled! I think it would make the move much less stressful when people have got such a great support network in NZ - a list of shops etc is brill!!! :yes

It is a great idea. But you should divide it into groups according to geographical location. I mean not all new people are going to Chr. or Welly, so I suggest that each one contribute in this idea to say first where he is. So it would be much easier for the new to find out what is closed to his/her location.

I think its an excellent idea.

I remember when we first moved to another county in the UK. My husband had accepted a job there.

We moved over the weekend and come Monday, off he went to work.

I had no idea where I was or where the shops were and I was now getting desperate cos I had only 2 left in my packet of Embassy (ciggies for the uninitiated ! Don't smoke now by the way.....)

To know that you have contacts and help and advice on the arrival into a new country is invaluable......I know it would help us enormously.

Good idea - almost like a picnic hamper for migrants - basic necessities.

yeah, sure, brilliant idea ! When we arrived in Chch, we were desperate for toys for the kids, ended up buying them each a scooter and a few little things, but still, 8weeks waiting for our container was really long for them. So anyone with kids, we can lend you toys and scooters, and other kiddies stuff. we don`t have any spare tv or anything remotely interesting apart from a folding bed and a few blankets.

Moorf - correction, you HAD an iron and ironing board - they are currently in our store room!!

I'd been thinking about this and you're right, it's a brilliant idea. We now have heaps of stuff - towels, bedding, bed linen, mattress, kettle, toaster, crockery etc etc (and more besides). We can discuss it if we manage to meet up next week to return the stuff you very kindly lent me!!

I think it's a brilliant idea - hubby and I were just talking about things like that at the weekend. We are hoping to arrive in South Auckland in about 3-4 weeks time and were thinking that we are going to be using quite a lot of our suitcase space for basic household items.

We had heard that there are shops that you can hire things from but don't know much about the sorts of items they stock.

And anyone wanting permenant homes for unwanted items........I sold off/gave to Rachel all my stuff...so I will need a list of Second hand shops/ reasonably priced furniture stores/electrical stores.....the list goes on!

Think this is an excellent idea.

It won't be too difficult begging and borrowing stuff after your house contents get taken away from friends and rellies, but at the other end would be more difficult.

So brilliant idea, and the toy idea is good too, we will be in the same situation, most of the toys will be too heavy to try and bring so will have to go into the container, just think it'll be like christmas when it arrives!!

What a superb idea Moorf

wether it could be done on a formal basis with a coordinator for each area or just on an informal basis with peeps announcing they are arriving and some kind soul says do you want to borrow the spare kettle/toaster/airbed/duvet/old car/wife; oopz didn't say that:nice1

We're in the process of leaving NZ for OZ - (chasing specific employment) and have tried to have a massive clear out recently - 2 garage sales - raising $2000NZ and i don't really know what we got rid of. What i am trying to say is that for those of you arriving it is worthwhile visiting the garage sales for those things you couldn't bring in the suitcase. Try the ones that say everything must go or emigrating! and arrive an hour before the advertised time, we did over 60% of our sales in the hour before we had advertised we were "open".

Chances are you can buy it at a garage sale then sell it again when your own stuff arrives for only a small loss.

This doesn't help getting through the "What will I make a cup of tea with/sleep on" question for the first few days but it may help for the following few weeks.

sad to be going

Thats a great idea. I guess it would need to rely on people though returning the borrowed goods once their stuff arrives. There might need to be some system to ensure people do that incase the pool gets emptied by non-return of stuff?

Don't know, call me paranoid or whatever. Or perhaps I've just been living in France too long! :)

I have just discovered a toy hire place, http://www.toyhire.co.nz/toy_results.asp?type=rent&filter=0, they have got allsorts, dunno if they are outside Auckland, but willing to bet there are similar places in the likes of Welly or Chch.

We avoided buying much, cos we rented bits and bobs from www.dtr.co.nz (http://www.dtr.co.nz)

Only thing you cant seem to rent is the household linens/crockery etc. all the small stuff that you cant live without....

What a fantastically thoughtful idea, we've still not got a firm date yet, but will be there around mid Oct - mid Nov time - wherever there is

We're not particularly organised yet, just going to arrive ;)

How about a welcome party too :laugh :cheers
