Our beloved mongrel is 10. She's a bit arthritic and nervous of loud noises. It looks like to ship her with something lke Golden Arrow would cost in the region of £2000. Anyone just organised it through the airline and shipped a pet as cargo? Obviously I'll need to wade through a mountain of beaurocracy to do this, but I'm knee deep already so this doesn't immediatly put me off!
We're leaning on the inlaws to take her because they live in the middle of nowhere, far from a road and although I love her dearly I'm not sure taking her is entirely in her interests. I'm just making a second-best plan. All advice RE dog shipping greatly received.

As far as I was aware (could be wrong :uhoh ) but you can only send animals to NZ through a registered pet transporter. Found this on the Air NZ website (does refer to animals from NZ to another country but can't see this being any different from the UK to NZ  ) -
"Any animal transported on Air New Zealand must be booked with Cargo Customer Service Unit by an approved Pet Transporter; delivered to the Air New Zealand Cargo Facility by an approved Pet Transport Company."
"Air New Zealand does not accept animals directly from the public because of the complexity involved in completing the pre-flight documentation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries compliance and veterinary checks."
We are sending our dog with Golden Arrows - costing £2100 but well worth it in the end I'm sure!! Hope this helps?

Hi there,
You'll find that most airline prefer to deal with a proffesional agency when it come to pet cargo and some (one of which being Air NZ) won't give you the option.
Along with the paperwork, there's tests that need to be conducted within strict timescales in the weeks before the pet flys out. Something to consider when you'll be rushing around doing all your other last minute jobs.
I'd love to hear from someone who has actually organised something like this themselves and how much it cost. I bet you couldn't do it for under £1k ?
