I had been intending to travel out on a visitors visa and sniff around for interviews on arrival, as I do not qualify under the points system without a job offer.
Well, it now seems I have impressed a Chch employer enough with my CV and telephone interview for a job offer. This is obviously fantastic news for us, but means we need to completely rethink our plans and start the ball rolling before departure. We had already booked flights for the end of June, now 8 weeks away, before the offer. Is it likely that I could gain PR before our departure based on this offer (I think I get 150pts with the offer), or should I be looking at getting a work permit?
Excited ... and confused!

First of all....CONGRATULATIONS. :raebanana :raebanana
Now, I'm not 100% sure on how to answer your question, but from the way you posed it, I would fill out your online EOI and go for it.
As I understand it, applications can be submitted and dealt with very quickly if a job offer is involved. If however, you need to take up your position in NZ before the paperwork is completed, this is also an option as the application can be finalised in NZ. I believe that a work permit will be issued for the interim period.
Others on this forum have done just that and I'm sure that they can advise you better than I.
Nothing is impossible.....you'll get there somehow.
Good luck with your plans, whatever you decide,
Julie

Thanks Julie,
I guess my real question was whether a work permit can be issued while I am going through the process of applying for PR, or whether the two are seperate.
Is there anyone who has been thorugh this who can give me a rough idea of how long it took for them to get PR and/or a work permit based on a job offer?

Hi Mal
Congratulations on the job offer. :clap
We did it.
Our application for PR was chugging (grinding) along with enough points but no job offer. After 2 months we hadn't been assigned a case officer.
OH had a call about a job, interviewed on Sunday night and contract was emailed 30 mins later. Emailed or called NZIS on monday early, they called later to arrange our interview. That was the next day. PR granted on Weds and OH went to London with our passports on Friday.
We shipped out four days later on Tuesday. It was a mad week,we hardly slept and if I did I was packing and making lists in my sleep. But we wouldn't have done it any other way.
We were committed to going as soon as we applied, had no house to sell (thank the lord) the worst bit was the goodbyes with family saying we were rushing, despite this decison being made 8 months prior!
So that's the long way round of saying .................Contact NZIS NOW, they should push it through for you quickly.
Good luck. :nice1

Thanks for the feedback folks, helps to ease my mind a little. I have received my contract by email, and a signed offer letter is on its way by post, so it looks like all systems go!
My major concern is that as I am starting my PR application so late that it might not be completed before I depart, and worse still before I am due to start the job (mid July). Does anyone know what will happen if this is the case? Will it be possible to get a work permit in the interim?
Thanks,
Malc

If you have your ITA ready get it in and then state what date you need to start. I am sure that if you make it really clear then they will make sure you have priority, the sooner you send it the sooner they can sort it.
If you have a case worker assigned from your EOI contact her/him and ask, or you could alway ring the London (or the one which would deal with your application) office - or email for advise?
Hope that helps, and good luck
Kat
