Iam finding it difficult to get my head round the fact that I will have to have the family car when we get to NZ as Ian intends to get a van.

I drive an MX5 Sport at the moment and I am ashamed to say I'm a bit of a "hooner" :o

My question is what performance cars are there in NZ. I rather like the look of the Audi A3 Sport, but I don't know what it like to drive or if it’s easily available there. Any other suggestions would be welcome...... I know a lot of people on the forum are anti car, and to you I apologise! :roll But fellow petrol heads your advice would be appreciated! :D

Hi willsken,
You may want to look at the ' Subaru ' if you're into performance cars with more than a few horses under the bonnet.

SUBARU IMPREZA WRX 2.5 SALOON. (if thats what floats your boat. ;))

Very nice car :yes And very available in NZ I believe.

I've had a look at the SUBARU IMPREZA WRX 2.5 SALOON and the power is awesome but I just don't like the look of the old ones..... now the new model, very very nice! Not sure Ian would go for it though! He'd prefer to spend some of that money on a camper van!!! :laugh

Nicola, I've been looking at cars as well - trawling the manufacturers websites. Do they do the RX8 over there? It's a 4 seater and very nice to drive. Just check out all the sites by replacing uk with nz (I'm sure your already have lol) :nice1

Just been on the Mazda site and saw this nice little hot hatch Mazda3 MZR 2.0 5dr Sport. Thats the kind of car. One that has room to be a family car (boot space!!! yuk) I'm off to look and see if I could get one in NZ and at what price :exit (Might go for a little test drive in one tomorrow!)

This thread made me smile........

As long as it gets me from a to b with all the kids inside (preferably with a little bit of space between them) and doesnt cost a fortune to run I couldnt care less what make/colour/engine size/model etc it is.

I never used to be like this!!!!!!

I'd forgotton.

Maybe I AM becoming *kiwised*

BTW - we have three kids and have a Honda Odyssey and a Toyota Caldina.
We do need both ......unfortunately.

I'm with Carol, when I arrived, and decided I needed a car that would fit a dog, a baby and us... its not a pretty car, but its fine. Have to say I do miss driving my little fiat Punto or hubbys Alfa :o

Hubby had already got a Mazda 323 Astina, and we can all fit in it (just) but nothing else in the boot but the large buggy. I have a feeling it would go very fast, but we dont get chance to try it out, only time we did the camera got us..... :p

I keep having fantasies of a LandRover Disco.....

We've become a Mitsubishi family. We have a Grandis (6 seater, 2.4L, big car) and a Colt (1300, economical, little car). And yes, we need two. It's hard to get around Auckland without a car, especially with kids in tow, or if you work nursing hours.
I really like our cars, both kids fit comfortably in the Colt, which is quite nippy for a 1300. And, although very gas hungry, the Grandis is lovely to drive.

Pretty much anything you can buy in the UK is available here. Some of it at a price- primarily European cars. Japanese cars 4 or 5 years old are probably cheaper than in the UK. Due to the fact that Japanese car rules mean that they become almost worthless in Japan.

You should be able to pick up an MX5 here for less than in the UK. But given that you have to have the "family" car - Subaru Legacy Wagon 250T (Estate for you UK folk) Easily capable of getting you thrown in Jail for 28 days for speeding at more than double the national speed limit (When will they realise that a 100kph national speed limit is plain silly but the 30kph in school zones, that everyone ignores, is a damn good idea.)

Given the roads here maybe just maybe you should buy an older MX5 for fun and a sensible family car for those "family" occasions. Something with lots of power is not really need here - something that will go round the corners quick is much more fun.
And bear in mind that running cars here is cheap compared to the UK. WOF (MoT) is $40 every 6 months Rego (Car tax) is $200 per year. Insurance - well you don't have to have it because third party personal liablitiy is covered by ACC - If you kill some one with your car you can't be sued by law (Sure you may go to Jail but you or your insurance Co. can't be sued for damages) Digressing, a career as a personal injury lawyer is probably not a good one to try to bring to NZ. This is a good thing!
If you do insure it is cheap - I insure 2 Porsche 928s with agreed values on both - $65k value is insured for $60 per month $50k value insured for $55 per month. remember to bring proof of your no claims bonus with you from the UK. Renewal letters and policy documents.

Said the man with two cars capable of comfortably exceeding the national speed limit in 2nd gear.

Mitsubishi GTO, that’s a family car :D

We have 2 cars, I run round in a Toyota MR2, OH has an Isuzu Bighorn.

My MR2(mrk2) is a 2 litre manual (no turbo) and quite old. Its cheap to run, lovely to drive on the open road, but can be a bit of a bone shaker on NZ’s town roads.

OH car is much more comfy but slow (its not a slow car, it has a huge engine its just you really don’t what to try throwing that around a corner)

The downside to a sports car is driving at night, there are so many 4x4’s and fog lights that when your sat that low you get dazzled quite a lot.

I did have one problem, someone very nearly reversed over me in a car park. Huge 4x4 simply didn’t see me. The only reason I didn’t get squashed was because I got out of the way!

When I do change my car I’m thinking of something a little bigger, possibly a Mitsubishi GTO
they are reasonably priced here in NZ (that’s my idea of a family car :nice1 )
