I've just had a thought..... rare I know, but still..... how did you transport all the luggage to where you were headed from the airport. I think we will have so much it won't fit in a normal boot, even if we buy a car in Auckland a soon as we arrive. Don't even know how we are going to get down to Hawkes Bay.... What did you all do?

We're taking 2 holdalls each (2 adults, 2 kids) and we've done a one way hire from Welly to Palmy, a station wagon, I'm praying it'll all fit, if not, the kids will be on booster seats (aka holdalls!)

We were lucky as we stayed in a hotel in Wellington so used the Shuttle bus. Although the back trailer ended up full with just our stuff :D
When it came to moving in the rental 3 days later we had luckily got a car sorted by then and shifted the stuff in one go. Trying to remember what we had, something like this, 3 large suitcases, 3 car seats, 4 rucksacks, laptop, pushchair and a travel cot, not sure how we moved it in one go but I think it was a tight squeeze (2 adults and 3 kids) :nice1
If you're heading straight down to Hawkes Bay then I'd do what Dawn is doing and rent a station wagon one way, just have to be careful with what you pack.

You can rent ute's too, actually, you can rent trailers http://www.hireitnow.co.nz or http://www.hireace.co.nz, so whatever you decide and however much you decide to take ms just-in-case, you will be able to transport it.

I'd already bought a 7 seater and arranged for it to be left at airport the night before.
Invested in a box of matches to keep my eyes open!

Yeah, I also looked at the Farmers site, think we need to do a bit of shopping here b4 we go, and take loads of cheap paint with you in the container because it costs a fortune down there.

Guilty as charged I'm afraid! Had a very boring day today, hubby is ill and kids have been out all day, finished housework by 9.00am, so did some virtual shopping (again!!).
Check out www.freedomfurniture.co.nz (thanks sizzlingbadger/smiler), fantastic, we'll be bankrupt shortly after arriving!

Nah not allowed paint in the container. :wah:wah
I'd have shipped over a shedload otherwise. Give me a 10 quid tub of boring old B&Q magnolia and I'll give you my right arm now.

That trailer idea looks your best bet Nicola.. I had enough trouble getting my two 32kg cases in a car, let alone with anything extra, like passengers :roll
Either that or hire a 7 seater and use the boot and one set of seats for the luggage.
We have got same prob when we go back to UK for hol, two cases, baby, buggy & hand luggage just won't fit for us to get a lift, so we have to drive round M25 at 6am after a 30 hour flight....... :wah , at least it wont be rush hour.

Isn't it just oil based paints you can't bring? :uhoh If you CAN bring some then I'd definitely fill up the gaps in the container!! Even if you don't need it you'll make a fortune on TradeMe or a garage sale!

You lot? Nah, I couldn't charge you lot half of what I could charge the locals!!!
Dabs... *groan*
I've just had a thought..... rare I know, but still..... how did you transport all the luggage to where you were headed from the airport.
We had a quite quiet (just us and one other guy) SuperShuttle, and the driver packed all our stuff in its trailer. If not, you could also keep an eye out for a minivan-style taxi. There are quite a few in Auckland. (Maybe this is what someone meant, at least partly, by the rent-a-7-seater suggestion.)

Sizzlingbadger,
noticed you took car seats - I was wondering about this. Apparently aged under 5 need them - so for me that it is our littlest - or is it 5 and under ? in which case it is 2 kids (aged 2 and 5). Do you have to have a car seat as part of your luggage allowance then and do they label them up at airport as they do a buggy ? sorry - like Nicola i'm worrying about stuff wway ahead - and I like this htread as we have 4 kids and a weekend away involves a 7 seater people carrier and a top box sometimes. I dread to think what it'll be like travelling - 2 of ours are big teenagers and sitting on top of holdalls just wouldn't work somehow !
Thanks, Tracey
