It has been lovely to discover this forum (through Google search). It is so refreshing to read about so many points of views.

Our situation is as follows:

We got our PR amd made our move to NZ in Dec 2001. By default, we landed up in Auckland and we bought our first NZ house up in Red Beach - a lovely coastal suburb in the North. Our boys were young (6 and 1) - so all that we needed was a decent primary school, pretty neighbourhood close to the beach and golf and we were done.

We are an Indian family, but living overseas for the last decade. We were in Hong Kong prior to moving to NZ and are currently in Singapore. I have been in the financial sector and had some unfinished business interests which needed me to be back in Asia. We sold our house and moved out of NZ in mid 2004. Well, the business interest is now finished (a little prematurely) and we will be returning to NZ - this time for good.

We travelled extensively around NZ - so we do know a fair bit about the place. However, travelling on holiday is one thing - deciding where to live is another. Our criteria are as follows:

1)Our boys are now older - one is going to be 11 soon and schooling (specially being in a school where it is the norm for students to go on to University) is probably our most important criteria. From all that we have read and heard so far - Auckland Grammar, Rangitoto and Burnside are the best outside of the private school network.

2)Having always lived in large cities - it is tough to give up the city feel altogether. At the same time, one really doesn't want to deal with the traffic and congestion and "big prices for small houses" associated with cities. We are trying to find a balance.

3)A nice and affordable Golf club, nearby :)

Based on our criteria, we have narrowed down to Christchurch (north west) - though the house prices there seem to be quite high considering the quality of the properties, lack of sea views or any views etc.

This is just a post to introduce ourselves. We would love to recieve feedback on our thoughts. I am happy to also help anybody who needs opinions/info about Auckland's northern parts - primarily Hibiscus Coast.

Hope to be in touch and maybe meet some of you when we are there.

Cheers

Thanks Nicola, Stevie and Marcia.

It may be Christchurch for us - hopefully it will be the right choice.

Thanks Smiler.

Boys are in school here, which finishes 1st week of June. Trying to shoot for 1st week of July. Guess, it will be veeeery coooold in CCH - wouldn't mind it after the year round equatorial hot weather and thunderstorms in Singapore.

Hi

We've been in Christchurch for just over two months now. We're in Sumner, which is a lovely seaside village, but there is no decent secondary school here. We love it here so much though that I think we are going to have to start saving for private schools!! The North West is expensive, but there are some really nice areas and, as you say, zoned for good secondary schools! There are probably people who could give you more information about Christchurch who have been here longer.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Kate.. Thanks for your reply.

I can understand your love with Sumner. In our first stint in NZ, we lived in a lovely house on a Coastal peninsula with water and views on all sides. We could walk it to here. :laugh

Its a tough call, isn't it? There are decrepit houses on offer around Burnside at pretty steep prices - clearly showing the sacrifices parents are willing to make for their kid's education.

I guess the dream location will have to wait.

Great to hear from you. Hope to catch a beer when we are there.

Defintely catch a beer when you're here! Whereabouts in India are you from? We spent 3 months travelling through India in our backpacking days and loved it.

Nice photo! Enjoy the heat in Singapore - we stopped for a week on our way here in March and it was so hot I thought we would melt. Great holiday destination though!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

Kate.. I grew up in Calcutta and worked in Bomay (mumbai) till the mid 90s before moving out of the country. Both were mad house cities with 12-15 million people - nowhere you should have gone as a tourist :laugh

Started exploring ideas for living outside Christchurch - either Kaiapoi/Rangiora or Prebbleton/Rolleston. Older boy has two and half years before high school and we may just have to "suck it and see" as long as there are good full primary (upto year 8) schools in the vicinity.

Being an obsessive planner and control freak :D I spent day, if not months, just looking at "areas" of Chch - I have to say, nothing prepared me for their actual "feel" so whilst it's worth sorting out some "must see" areas, do keep an open mind. Not only that, but in my experiences places do "grow" on you - we are now living in an area we crossed off the list 1.5 yrs ago as "hicksville" and now it's just where we want to be!

The Press had Burnside as the topic of it's "surburb shapshot" this weeken - it's a regular feature. Here's what it said, it a nutshell...

Location - NW Chch
Distance from Cathedral Square - 6km
Landscape - flat
Rateable authority - Chch
Amenities - recreation - Burnside Park, Roydvale Reserve, Nepal Reserve, Westburn Reserve; shopping - shops on Kenal Ave/Burnside Cresc coprner, shops on Kendal Ave/Charlcott St corner
Buses - Orbiter, airport bus, routes 3 (Avonhead), 19 (Burnside), 24 (Hyde Park)
Closest Schools - Burnside primary, Kendal primary, Westburn primary, Christ the King primary, Cobham Intermediate, Burnside High
Housing type - mid 20th century to contemporary houses and units
House prices - older, smaller homes and units from $225,000; average 3-bed house from $275,000 to $400,000, larger newer homes up to $600,000.
Rents - $200 to $500 /pw
Sections - few available

You probably knew all that already but some bits might help!

A couple of others areas you might consider investigating - Wainoni (north of North New Brighton), Pegasus Bay (if you like the gated community type of set up and fancy a punt on a very new development), Governors Bay, and also West Melton/Kirwee are growing and becoming increasingly popular with commuters - it's about 20 mins into the centre of town from West Melton. Also Opawa has some lovely areas and what about Ohoka out near Rangiora?

The above aren't listed with any consideration to schools - can't help in that dept!

Oh, and my Dad was born in Calcutta !!

All the best,
Moorf
