Hi,
Just discovered the forum and I'm trying to find out more about steam cleaning stuff for shipping without much luck. I've read that containers can become damp, if say a car is steam cleaned and shipped. I obviously want to avoid damp if at possible even if it means leaving things behind and wonder if anyone can advise what other items have to be steam cleaned e.g. bicycles. The container is being packed in 4 weeks so I guess I need to be quick in deciding what's going in. Thanks in advance.
David.

One removers advised me to clean the car and then leave it under cover if possible for at least 3 days. He was trying to sell me on the advantages of me cleaning the car and them packing it onto the crate at the house, (the other removers want to drive the car to the depo then pack.) IN reality there is only so much you can do to keep things dry, if you have your container packed at home and it's a rainy day then you just have to get on with it.

Can you get big tubs of something like silica gel. You see little sachets of them falling out of electrical packaging boxes.
When you look at pictures of container ships most of the containers appear to be above the deck, with a fair majority open to the elements.
Has anybody had problems with damp?

These photo's show why you don't put a wet car in to a container:-

I pressure washed my Jag then left it in the garage to dry for a week before it went in to the container. It came out just as it went in.

 looking at those pics made me feel sick. I hope he got the matter sorted in the end. I read the thread but couldn't find an update.

Yes, totally agree, I would have gone balistic if that had been my stuff, lucky that the wife was a solicitor - how a firm can say that they did nothing wrong is beyond me!
I wonder what the regulating bodys like BAR had to say about it?
Hopefully things will change, with the power of forums to get the message across to prospective customers, these new customers will be aware and question their behaviour and ethics on such BAD (well you cant even call it) Customer Service.

We didn't steam clean anything. Just cleaned it, and MAF seemed to be ok with that. Bikes, outdoor play stuff, gardening, hiking boots, camping gear, outdoor chairs. Just a good power hose and brush to get off the dirt and any possible bugs.

It's posts like this that make me wonder if it's worth all the effort of taking all your worldly goods half way round the world.......
I know it doesn't happen to many, but if we were one of the few, I would be totally devastated.

Don't think you have to steam clean normal stuff - not sure about cars though. Everything else is ok to be cleaned with disinfectant - Jeyes fluid is available in Home Bargains stores (if you lucky enough to have one near to you) for 4.99 for a litre great bargain - if it was good enough for foot and mouth disease it's good enough for NZ!
Just dilute it and you get loads of use out of it.
