Hi All,
Since deciding to bite the bullet 2 weeks ago and just go this summer on visitors visa, get job offer, get permit and live happily ever after etc etc, my OH has now had interest shown in him by an NZ company. If that very rare thing of a job offer from NZ whilst still in UK materialises does anyone know how long it would take to get the work visa from over here?
If we were able to does that mean we can then take our goods into the country? Also it is our interntion to apply for PR once there but would we have to go through all the medicals and all that stuf here simply to get the work permit?
Can anyone shed any light on this one?
Cheers

I have a friend who got one very quickly (within a week or so) in London, this was after she's had a lot of problems applying in NZ (qualification didn't match area of work etc), but I'm sure it takes a lot longer in some cases.

Hi Nanny,
I am in exactly the same position, had intended to travel on visitor visa but now have job offer to start mid July. I am in the process of filling out the work visa application at the moment, London NZIS office have quoted a time of 4 - 6 weeks to process.
I will keep the forum informed as things progress.

It's me and the other half, we are heading to Christchurch at the end of June. My last day at work today, from now on things should really start to snowball!
Also, I read on another thread today (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6412) that someone had taken their work visa application to NZ House in London and got their visa there and then, so 4-6 weeks is obviously beatable!

Good Luck with OH's job interest, Nanny.
Being nosey, is there any reason you won't just go straight for PR from the UK?

Hi Smiler,
Several reasons why we heading out or visitors visa.
Firstly, hubby is a carpenter by trade and whilst we had enough points to put in an EOI we have not be able to trace his C & G cert's provings his quals. C & G have no record - which is bizarre as they awarded it to him all those years ago and we have hit a brick wall trying to trace them elsewhere. So he would need a job offer to bump at the points. He has been told he will have no problem getting work but he really has to be there or at least have a firm date to be available from.
Secondly, the sale of the house will aslo finance the trip and my sister who is out there says the exchange rate is in our favour at the moment so IF we did settle it would be a good time to cash in our £££'s. I am having a massive wobble this morning as we really only decided to go for it two weeks ago after a year or more of toying with the idea. I am off to Berkshire today to tell my elderly folks of our intentions and the very thought of that alone is enough to make me want to back out.
Thirdly, I am probably having some sort of mid life crisis and feel ripe for an adventure!
And fourthly, and probably the most telling reason is that I am IMPATIENT ;) . Our eldest starts secondary school in September and I didn't really want to oik him out after a few months. Also, if I am given the time to dwell on what we are actually doing I will back out much to the dissappointment of the rest of the family. I have always been a home bird, I love my life here in Kent, I have close family ties and a lovely circle of friends - even typing this makes my question why I would want to leave it!
BUT, we are being handed the best opportunity on a plate. We will live at my sistrs indefinately and pay only bills, she has volunteered herself and her OH to go and sleep on their bus on the drive! I have her, a niece and nephew, and three (soon to be frour) great nephews out there so that is three generations. I bleat on about how hard it will be etc etc and then I see people on here going sight unseen (we have been twice) and with no-one so then I give myself a kick, pull my socks up and ring the removals comapanies! If we can't make it with all that support we never.
The absolutue worst case scenario is this - move out, can't settle, come back to a smaller house - there are worse things in life and it will be an adventure, good or bad, but it will be one.

Hi there
We were in exactly the same position as you last September.A NZ company had offered my OH a job but had never employed anyone from the UK before so had no idea of the procedure. They wanted him to start asap but at that stage we had no visa and had not got an offer on the house!
We took all our paperwork (including written job offer and proof that no one else could do the job)up to NZ house on I think it was the Wednesday and got our 5 visas back on the Saturday!
My OH therefore left for NZ in October and me and the kids came out on 5th November once the house has sold. So things can happen very quickly!
We have just had our 6 month anniversary here and are very happy apart from the lack of central heating!
Oh 1 other thing , you will need to have medicals and Xrays before you get your visa and then have then all over again if you apply for PR once you are here!
Good luck , please PM me if you have any other questions
