Hi All.

My OH has been playing on t'internet (bless) and has decided that we should seriously contemplate having a look at Wanganui and adding it to our list of 'Possible Places to Settle' (That makes 5 now !!)

Sooooooo - can anyone give us the low down on Wanganui.....good or bad - warts an' all.

:cheers

Mmmmmmmm.......I'll take it from the lack of response, thats it has a river (a big one) and that it's the most fabby place in NZ and thats why no-one wants to share any info. :roll

Oh well, back to Google......

:cheers

Julie

In all honesty we've been there twice. On our way to somewhere but have always stopped there for an afternoon.

The well kept high street seems bustling even on a Saturday afternoon. Older style with the hang over shop fronts. One of the roads leading up to the town centre seems a bit run down.

There is a wide range of housing with some very nice ones facing the river and lots of walks and green space. We were there on christmas eve and there was a gig going on in the town square, with great bands and people sitting down to watch. People chillin out rather than racing round the shops.

A few souped up cars a cruisin, but the grid system seems to encourage that.

Look here http://www.wanganui.com

That's my opinion ;) hope it helps a tad.

Don't get me started on Stratford though.......

Julie I have just remembered. A girl at work has friends living there, have done for years. They love it!

We stopped there for lunch (very nice) and we had a game of ten pin bowling (I didn't win :no ) The place seemed very nice from what we saw of it!

As you aren't restricted by jobs, it could be as good a place as any to start! :nice1

Its recently had a referendum on whether to change its name to Whanganui (thats how the river is spelt), but the public voted to keep it as it is, there was a bit of gang violence after that, but its all gone quiet now.

Thats all I know,

Hi i went there at christmas for an interview before we moved here and it had lots of facilities but there was a lot of gang stuff going on that nobody seemed to like talking about. I didnt feel right there and so turned the job down. On the plus side the people i met were friendly and the scenery was lovely. Also i think its there they have had a few earthquakes off the coast just lately 4.8 on the richter scale i believe.I found the house expensive and not many rentals at all very poor choice. Hope that helps Cardy

Hi Paul.

Yes thank you - it did help.

I had already read about the 'gangs' (thanks Sal) so I did some research, but at the end of the day Paul, it's like you say - you have just got 'to feel right' in a place and you don't know 'til you get there do you?

Will now research the earthquakes........

Maybe its a case of - if the gangs don't get you, the tsunami will......... :roll

Thanks everybody,

Julie
