I am just about ready to send off my PR application (through Family- Partner is a kiwi). :D I am just waiting for my bloodwork on my medical exam.
But after reading this site I am wondering if I should also apply for a work permit now. I have checked my points and I have the number needed for EOI- but I thought you needed the same documents for work permit as PR anyway so I would just wait until after I heard on my PR.
Does any of this make sense? One of the other posts said the work permit was really quick, so should I apply for that at the same time as PR or just wait? Or does the PR not entitle me to work anyway?
Thanks!

:laugh Not for me at this time of night but I'll do my best.
PR entitles you to work, no worries. But if you are applying for PR and during your ITA going through, you get a job, NZIS can fast track your application.
I think you can only apply for a work visa if you are offered a job as it is specific to that job (at first). Once here you can then apply for PR. You'll still need to provide the same stuff. The medicals etc are cheaper here. Some people that have applied for PR have got WTR visa's instead but I don't know the reason for that.
I am unsure on the work visa bit as we didn't come this way. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
I'd stick with your PR application
HTH. :D

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't I read somewhere that you are currently living in Christchurch?
If that is so and you have been offered a job, I would imagine that a work permit will suffice until your 'Family' application is processed. I believe that you need a specific job offer to apply for a work permit.
Is there a NZIS office in Christchurch?
Give them a ring or call in maybe?
Best from the horses mouth so to speak, IMHO

hi
I just posted a reply to your other thread and then saw this one...
You can apply for a work permit without a job offer under the partnership category - to the best of my knowledge - as Julie suggested, give NZIS a call to discuss your options.
PR will entitle you to work, but you'll need a work permit if you want to work while you're waiting for PR to be processed.

Thanks all. That is very good advice. I will call NZIS (think there is one in Christchurch) and see what I can find out- and I'll let you know!

I spoke to the Christchurch office today and the woman there said the best course of action is to apply for PR (if you are applying under Partner) and the work permit at the same time since they require much the same documentation. She said just to stick a note in with the work permit stating that the medical and FBI forms are in with the PR application.
By her estimation the work permit could take 1-4 weeks and the PR approval 9-12 months.
So I am going to go down there first thing Wed morning and hope for the best!
Oh, and you do not have to have a job offer under Partnership.

Thanks very much for this information. It's useful for me (Kiwi citizen) and my partner who currently has a job offer and is applying for PR under partnership category.

When Jenny came to Canada, we made the mistake of not trying to get a work visa at the same time as applying for PR as we thought that our costs in applying for the visa would not be recouped before PR is granted. But hind site is always 20/25.
