Just looking ahead to when we move and bring our two very large dogs with. We will be living on the S. Island (Nelson). Is it better to quarantine them in Aukland so that we can get them off the plane sooner, or have them go all the way to Christchurch for quarantine so we don't have to get them on an internal flight again after quarantine. We would appreciate comments from anyone who has dealt with this in the past. (They'' be flying out of LA in the States). Thanks! Oh, and I forgot about the cat too!

Haven't done it yet myself, and when I do we'll be stopping in the NI, but I'd have thought better to get the whole trip over with; easier, while they are still in their travel crates, too. :hopeso

Hi there,
There is a ton of info in various places on this forum about moving pets....and the bad news is, I think, that all pets coming from the US have to go to Auckland for 30 days. When we make our move, my husband is going to stay up in the area for the month, because our home near Wellington is too far, and we need to see our pets frequently! This is really a subject near and dear to a lot of us on this forum. Look up "Qualified Pet Services" in Auckland (I can't find my link) and they can fill you in on every single thing you need to know/do/prepare for. Also, there is a pet shipping outfit out of L.A. which can tell you a lot too. If you want to PM me, I can tell you more, as the stuff for US pets is very different than for UK pets. :cool

I'd check this out with MAF if I were you, its a lot less strain on the animals to just do the one haul, even if they are cleared by Maf at Auckland they maybe able to carry on down to Welly in their crates for the Quarantine period.

The only are in Auckland and Christchurch. If you'll be settled in Nelson your pets would be better off spending their 30-day period in Chch so you can see them more often. They'd probably rather get off the plane sooner, but it's only a 90-minute flight from AKL to Chch.

It's about 270 miles between Nelson and Chch, not an impossible drive to make every weekend.

Thanks so much for all the great advice! We will most likely have them go all the way to Christchurch as my fiance has family there we can stay with during visits. It is likely a good idea just ot 'get it over with' in one stretch, but you feel bad for the little guys.
