Does anyone have a check list of items that should not be shipped in the container e.g. bank statements, no claims certificates etc.?

For those who have already made the trip, was there anything you wished you hadn't shipped? I'm more than happy to collate responses and post for future reference.

Hi ya,

My sister in NZ has suggested we don't waste valuable container space shipping out fridges and freezers. She saiys that they don't travel well and often don't work once they reached their destination.

Also we have seen that camping equipment is on the NZ prohibited items list. We have 1 millets tent we have used twice - should we really not take it? Anyone?

A collated list would be great!

I was thinking more along the lines of what should be packed in your suitcase instead of your container i.e. what do need to have at hand before your container arrives in NZ.

Camping equipment is FINE - just make sure it's clean before you go. Even if they do check your tent on arrival it''ll take 10 minutes for them to have a look at - and the benefits of free camping in such a beautiful country are priceless !

(Plus you may be sleeping in your sleeping bags / camping mats for the first couple of weeks months until your container arrives or you buy new!)

I carried with me

bank statements
credit card statemets
past rental agreements
a letter from our landlord stating what wonderful tenants we were
birth certs
copies of our passports
our shipping docs
marine insurance docs
copies of our utility bills
paper part of driving licence as well as photo bit






The only thing needed before our container arrived was the shipping papers.

The rest was sentimental personal stuff that I could not have replaced if the ship went down, some photos, jewellry and other bits and bobs. Oh and our laptops.

We basically bought with us anything that was needed for proof of ID/income or things that were of great sentimental value (obviously if thats your grannys old dining table thats not an option... :p )

In addition to Smilers list, we also bought with us employment references and any certificates/qualifications that an employer may want to see as proof.

Our approach with the paperwork was that if it cant be easily/quickly replaced then it goes in the suitcase...

I did promise to consolidate a list for ease and have come across the following list of documents which suggests all should either be originals or certified true copies: -

Passports with valid visas
Birth certificates
Marriage Certificate and family records
International and/or local Driving licence
Other identity documents
Proof of education such as diplomas and certificates
Academic transcripts
NZQA Reports
Proof of continuing education, internship or training
Proof of employment & work experience
Reference letters from previous & current employers
Curriculum Vitae or resume
Credit References from your landlord and telephone/gas/electricity suppliers
Insurance and valuation documents
List of all personal belongings for customs and insurance purposes
Medical, immunisation, vaccination and dental records
Contact details of relatives and friends in New Zealand

Other docs/items:-

shipping docs
marine insurance docs
irreplaceable sentimental items
jewellery
some photos
laptop
travel adapter plug
car insurance "No Claim Certificate" - ask for when cancelling policy
mobile phone - ask network/phone provider to remove SIM restriction
