We ended up living 1 hour and twenty minutes outside Wellington up the SH1. The movers at this end are charging us an extra $600 because of the distance. Anyone have any experience with having their stuff delivered well away from the port? Were you charged a similar rate?

Thanks!
J

Don't know Jess, we haven't got there yet.
What I do know is we have been advised by the shippers we are using ( Britannia )that there will be an additional charge for delivery outside a radius of 35 miles ( I think ) from port.
How much they charge per extra mile, I haven't a clue.

Hi All
My understanding in the quotes we have requested is that they are door to door? Even it is not an exact address but for example Torbay, North Shore.

Were none of you qouted to door?

Bubbles, just wondered how Britania fared with quotes? We have a three bedroom house and the usual stuff that goes with that plus an extra sofa and two chairs.

Hi NannyOgg - I was quoted door to door for a move to Welly. That covered a certain area around the city, but I moved well out of the city, thus the extra fee. Just wanting to make sure it's a reasonable extra fee for the distance...

Hi Nanny,

Britannia as far as prices go were in the middle ground. Same as you really, 3 bed home and everything that goes with that, sole use 20 footer. They quoted £3500 door to door. Tauranga being the port of destination, but as we don't have an address at the other end yet I guess thats where the within 35 mile radius from port bit comes into play.

We shall have to wait and see. :nice1

My two cent's worth? It seems extortionate to me. If I remember rightly our quotes were door to door, within 30 k of Welly. We would, in theory, had more charges if we have moved further out.

Having had some quotes for moving from NZ companies they seem to quote anything between $100-135 + GST per hour. You may feel they have you over a barrel but it's surely an hour max from depot to you? Can you negotiate?

Is there anyone in the UK or US who could check what the additional charges would be if it were being shipped the other way i.e. NZ to UK/US and you decided to move further afield than you originally intended.

I think this would indicate whether shippers exploit the fact they have your possessions or are specifically taking advantage of 'cash rich' immigrants. By this I make reference to the 2 tier structure where locals and tourists will pay differently for, say, the same hotel room. This practise is prevalent in Australia & South Africa (& probably a lot of other countries too) and often by as much as 50%.

As Jersey is only 9 by 5 miles, change of location is insignificant for the local shippers so not worth checking here.

Smiler - Thanks. It seemed high. I will definitley negotiate. I just need to have some idea of what's reasonable, so I have something to say other than "That sounds high." (I'm a terrible haggler. Abysmal.) Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

No worries, let us know what they say.

I'm not obsessed with shipping and moving charges, honest.;)

...Well, it turned out that our move 46 miles from the port at Wellington was actually covered by the contract. I couldn't find any mention of extra charges for distance, so I called Trans Global, and they said that I had paid for delivery within 50 miles of port. The mover at this end said their contract was with Global Ocean Freight who actually did the shipping, and they needed to hear from them directly. So I called GOF, and GOF says they talked to the movers here in NZ, and I will not be charged. Phew. Pays to double check on the charges.

we were originally going to Auckland so that was where our quote was for, but after visiting the Waikato region changed our minds, and was charged $600 for the privilige, Te Awamutu is about 1.5-2 hours away from Auckland.
