Hi,

I'm just wondering what the implications would be in buying a car whilst on a WHV (looking to secure a permanent job). How would the vehicle be registered if you had no permanent place of residence? Do vehicles need to be registered? Would I have to secure a place of residence first? What implications are there on age and length of license held before being able to drive abroad? I would only be 19 and driving for 2 years on arrival.

As insurance is not compulsary, would 3rd party cover be relatively cheap?

I would be there on a 23month visa (just to make 'doubley' ("-1") sure).

Many many thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me.

Hi there,

I bought a Subaro Leone for NZ$700 from a backpacker and it came with Rego (registration) and a warrant of fitness (WOF - the kiwi equivalent of an MOT).

I didnt insure the car, I was on a UK driving license (age 28 at the time) and drove all round NZ , then sold it for $950 -not bad eh?

You just need to hand your money over to the seller (once you're satisfied about the car of course) and they'll give you the registration sheets. I registered it at the place I was staying at the time. I did know of people who used the backpackers address as the rego address.

19 - you'll be fine. Insurance is for personnel preference. I did 12 months without any. It depends how confident you are as a driver, how much you buy a car for, how much spare cash you have and also how much peace of mind you want should there be an accident.

Good luck - watch out for the mobile speed cameras when you just come out of a town - I got stung $400 once. He said I was doing 90 kmph in a 50 zone - $10 per klick. I thought I was doing over 100 (70 mph)
