Hi my husband is due for his medicals soon. He is actually suffering from clinical depression. He has some episodes now and then but they are controlled by taking homeopathic meds. He also has Hepa B but has not infected me because he said he has the antibodies for it. Would these be grounds for NZIS to decline our application. He had actually gone into military service in South Africa (where he came from) and was sent home bec of his depression (actually, his mother and brother died one after the other).
Is anyone here who has a similar case i'd like to know more about it.
Thanks,
Jaziboo

Hi,
I havent suffered from clinical depression but ive had a bit of stress in the recent past, my advice to you would be to get along to your GP and set the wheels in motion and ask him to refer you to a specialist, if you havent already got one.
If you have try and get an appointment with him and based on my personal experience they will want from a specialist a letter detailing, current health, any treatment and the likely longer term progonosis.
Sorry cant help with the hep B part of the question.
Cheers
Albert

Here's a copy of the health exam your GP will be required to fill out:

And the "Heatlth Requirements Leaflet" (note that there are two sets of info, for policies pre November 28 2005, and post that date):

The way I am reading them, yes they will want to know about the depression and hep B, but if they are unlikely to cause "significant" costs to the system, and he can still earn a living/take care of himself, it's not going to pose a problem. I don't know the dollar amount on "significant" costs, but from what you describe I doubt he falls into that category.
What homeopathy does your husband use for depression? My husband has an anxiety disorder with occasional depression, and hates the idea of using pharmeceuticals for it. We have tried a few herbs with varying results.
Another question I have, to anyone here who may know, is whether it is wise to seek treatment for mental disorders if they are "under control" with herbs, relaxation techniques, and whatnot? Does it make NZIS think you are sicker if you appear to require specialist treatment?
When my mom was applying for health insurance she had to fill out medical histories for the family over X amount of time, and because the paperwork made such a big deal out of complete disclosure, she diligently listed every little malady and flu she could remember. The agent advised her to take it all out because we sounded sick as dogs!
Okay, two different circumstances certainly, but when it comes to applying for things, if we stress too much about how sick we are, maybe the agents will give it too much notice as well?

Sorry I can't help with the original question. But Juniper, if your OH has been diagnosed by a doctor with any condition I think you will need to list it. If it's just something he suffers from occasionally but has not saught treatment for I think you'd be ok not to mention it.

thanks tigerlily :-) i think we'll mention it anyway, but i was hoping that the fact he can manage it without formal treatment will count in his favor...

Thank you for your suggestions, he has tried a few of those, but there are some new things on the site to check out :-)
Right now we're experimenting with a product called Gaba Calm by Source Naturals, Gaba being the supplement (an amino acid). The best part is that it can be taken sublingually for immediate effect, instead of keeping it up through diet.

(didn't realize it was used for body building too, weird)
