My 19 year old son collapsed last week and had a heart attack. He is not over weight and very fit and healthy so cant understand what has gone wrong. He is waiting to see the cardiologist. It looks like he may get medically discharged from the army too as he is a mounted guard in the household cavalry based at Knightsbridge. This means that he will have to reconsider his career options. It happend when he was on a very tough training course and had got through to the last stage.
I feel totally gutted for him and worried and guilty that I am over here but I cant do anything about it too so am powerless.
Am waiting to hear more news as to whats happening. He likes action and extreme sports and was not intending to take up a career with horses. He said that he wants to come over here to live but dont have a clue as to what he could do work wise and also the flight would be pretty dodgy due to his heart. If I go back to the UK there is still nothing I can really do as he is still at barracks.
Life can really stink at times.

That must be very worrying for you. Hopefully, as a fit young man he will make a full recovery. All the best.

Dot that is dreadful news, the feeling of not being able to day anything must be really hard.
The only thing you can do at the moment is keep open the lines of communication and then once the outcome of his tests has been determined then maybe some decisions will need to be made.
Sounds futile me telling you to try not to worry but sadly that's all the advice I can give you for now. Hope all turns out OK for you.

blue - what a shock for you. I mean it as a kind of reassurance when I say that I believe it does happen that very fit and not-overweight young people experience heart attacks. Beyond that I'll be quiet because I am clinically ignorant, except to say that there is probably a wide spectrum of degrees and kinds of health/practical impacts that this might have on your lad. As others have said, we'll just have to wait and see what the experts say, I guess.
Also, if I may be presumptuous enough to say this when you never even raised the topic, one tip I am starting to think is valid is to be quite careful about how you use the 'Web to do any research on cardiology and the like. Anecdotes, dictionary entries and others' experiences can be very scary or unreliable especially when -- often except for one vital, small clinical detail that turns out to make all the difference -- they seem to be v.similar to what is going on in your own case.
On the other hand, of course, I am all for anyone absorbing all they can about a condition using the 'Web. I'm just sounding a caution because you/your family might be tired and vulnerable right now anyway, and the Internet just needs to be kept in proportion.
Hope that doesn't come across as patronizing. You probably don't need to be told anyway. :nice1
All the very best. You can always come to the forum for listeners, support or help. :yes

So sorry to hear this and wishing you strength and your son a full and speedy recovery. Maybe the fact that this has happened now will enable him to have tests and attentive care that will ensure there will be no problems later in life. I hope so.

What a shock and no doubt a worst nightmare.
If it helps at all, I am a reiki practioner & run energy workshops, and totally believe in the power of positive thought and how this does help.
Although it's not possible not to worry, if you could try to find the time & space to send un-worrying thoughts to your son, and see him as he usually is, fit, healthy & happy, it will help.
With your permission I would be happy to send distant reiki to him and to you.
Anyone on this forum could do the same just by consciously taking 5 minutes to specifically send loving thoughts to you, your family and the situation.
I wish you strength and hope for a very speedy recovery for your son.

I am also very sorry to hear your news. You are right when you say that there is nothing you can do for him in the UK and I'm not suprised you feel helpless at the moment. I hope they sort things out quickly for him. Perhaps he could then come to NZ once they are sure all is well.

Dot. So sorry to hear about your son, but i'm sure with the right care he is receiving now things will turn out the way they should. I know words aren't enough from complete strangers at a time like this, but at least we lend a listening ear. As you say whats the point of jumping on a plane now knowing you can't do much when you arrive. Reassess the situation in a few weeks time and make your decisions from there. In the meantime i hope he does make a speedy and successful recovery.

I wish you all the best.

Thanks for all your good wishes.
Koen it was due to the training and his electolyte level dropped. He is now on medication and they think it is a one off event. He has also given up smoking! He is taking it easy and feeling a lot better. The cardiologists are going to see him regularly and he doesnt require heart surgery or anything at the moment.
Household cavalry have told him that they are happy for him to continue with them at Knightsbridge so everything has turned out ok so far.

Dot - that is fantastic news!! You must be so relieved. A similar thing happened to Jan's dad when his electrolyte levels dropped. He HAS got a heart problem though and has a defibrillating pacemaker fitted.

Dot, :raebanana for the good news, and nice to see he has decided to quit smoking. hopefully he will be fighting fit in no time and back on the gee-gees...he does ride doesnt he? think I remember you saying he wouldnt like to work with horses when he gets out.....yes I can imagine why, after years of getting up before school to muckout and then after school to ride, I revelled in the lie ins and not having to go to see to the horses before opening my pressies on Xmas day.
but now 20 yrs on, and after helping Rachel with hers (she'd never give them up) I have been bitten by the bug and wouldnt mind one again....one day!
Any way what I meant to say before going off on a tangent, was that I hope that he fully recovers and has a great future!
because as mums thats all we ever want isnt it.........that theyre happy and healthy! :nice1
