Does anyone else suffer with Mosquito bites since moving to NZ? Last night there was one, just one, in our bedroom and I’ve been bitten again. I look like the elephant man today with this huge welt on my forehead and one on my neck which is itching like crazy but I daren’t stratch it – it already looks like a love bite (I should be so lucky!). I’m dreading the summer, any recommendations?

Move down here, I haven't seen one in years ;)

You might want to try some Avon Skin So Soft (forest fragrance) dry oil - the SAS use it to keep mozzies away - and I do too because I swell up like a balloon and they LOVE me - Woz can be next to me and not get a single bite - yet I will have ankles the size of elephant feet and bites everywhere - so I can sympathise. If you can't get the Avon stuff up there then let me know and I'll send you some up.

Gin and tonic is supposed to work too (it's the quinine or something in the tonic - the gin just stops you caring!).

Robocan. We got one and have not seen a fly/ant/creepy crawly in the house since, we got the green one after a recommendation, but not sure what the difference is between the green or blue?

bunnings had them on offer I think?

Difference between green and blue is one is organic or "natural" and the other isn't... I use the non-PC one. And yes, it works wonders, the only flies alive in this house are on my jeans... :laugh

Robocan ..... I swear by them. No mozzies, flies or anything that buzzes in our house (hmm - well - maybe just one thing).

Must say that mozzies aren't a huge problem here but as soon as you get near water the sand flies come out in force.

Just one thing to watch with the Robocans though. We got one back in Jan and thought it was great. But at the same time my asthma got a lot worse than normal. It was only when we went for a weekend away that I noticed my asthma had completely gone. So when we got back we removed the Robocan and believe it or not my asthma had gone in a few days.

Good point - did you have the "natural" one or the chem one? We had both Robocans going all the time my little neice was here - she suffers from asthma too - and, thankfully, it didn't seem to affect her - I bought the "natural" one for the duration of her stay before getting the hardcore one!!

Electric toothbrush Moorf!! Tut :roll

Robocans, do they plug into the mains? And I take it Avon is available in the shops down there??

a) Of course! Toothbrush! I'm still doing it manually ;)

b) Robocans run off batteries so you can pop them anywhere in the house :nice1

c) Not sure about getting it in shops, you can buy it online or if you're lucky (or unlucky, whichever way you look at it!) you have an neighbour who's an Avon rep :D

Oooh G & T, cant remember the last time I had one of them.... quinine stops you getting malaria apparently.

Forgot about the Avon stuff, maybe need to bring some back with me ready for when summer comes back.

Funny about the robocan I have had a sore throat for weeks, ah well, if it gets better while we are away, I know what it is!

We had the blue one, so probably the hardcore one :D

Might give the green one a go next summer.

Mexican in NZ

Hi there i am originally form Acapulco, Mexico and as many of you may know is a tropical place so many mosquitoes there!!!
We usually have moaquito screens in our windows and door, but in case we get bitten is good to put sth that smells like eucalipt or even vic vapor rub is great! with that smell the mosquitoes do not like it and wont come close to you! if you do use vik's then the inflamation of the mosquito bite will decrease is very good.
Those are some kinda natural remedies that i am aware of, hope it helps!

Citronella Oil in lamps (garden lamps for outdoors / smaller ones for indoors) or even in form of candles. You should get it at the Warehouse..

Re citronella - what am I doing wrong? I gave up burning it in the clay holders with wicks because it just produced a stream of black smoke :o

We have the same problem with the citronella bellowing black smoke as well  It would be good to know if there's a way to burn it without it.

Ohhh, that's a new one, I must try that Vicks idea on sandflies next summer :nice1 thanks for that!!

We had a small open top lantern - cute little one that looked like oil lamps in the days before electric lights :laugh

Make sure that only the oil burns and not the wick or the clay. Its not the oil that produces the smoke - so the wick should be well soaked in oil.
