Hi all,
This is my first time on the boards. I've been reading them for a while but never asked any questions. My husband (Sam), myself and our 2 boys (8 & 9) are currently looking into emigrating to NZ. We're currently exploring the different ways we can do this, but I'm a bit stuck on a qualification question.
My husband works in IT (Team Leader/Engineer in infrastructure support in a bank) but doesn't have any qualifications in IT. He does however have a HNC in Building. Can anyone tell me whether this is recognized by NZIS?
Ironically, I have a Degree in IT but haven't worked for two years since we moved to Scotland and have very little experience.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Paula

Hi,
HNC will almost definately be recongnise here as they used to have them here some years ago. The HND or HNC. I too have this qualification in Building , but never had it verified, as i used my trade qualifications instead, to get here. A list should be on the web site of all recognised qualifications, i know city and guilds are, It is equivalent to a construction management qualification here, i think thats its name.
Mine didnt really do me any good here to be honest, they dont seem to be care about the paperwork when you first get here( employers), but care more about whether you can do the job and have experience here( which you can get until you get a job. Its a kind of chicken and egg situation), but i have eventually used it to get into my current job and it is a prerequsite of my current position to have this qualification or its equivalent
hope this helps
If i can help you in any other way just ask..

Yeah, welcome to the forum - HNC's are indeed recognised on the NZIS website, but it depends on which subject it is. Go to the EOI completion notes section on the immigration website and read thoroughly. Bit of a pain but there you go. You will probably be better using your IT qualification. But you may come to a sticky patch on the experience stage if you haven't worked long in the field.
Do the online points indicator for both of you, to see which gives you the best score. Then weigh up the pro's and con's of each application. And keep on using the forum because there are many people on here who can help you in some way.
Good Luck :nice1

Thanks one and all for your quick replies. On the same note... if he applies using his HNC in Building would his work experience have to be in the same field? His work experience is all in IT. We keep getting confused when trying the online points calculator as it just say 'do you have a recognized basic qualification?' - but doesn't say whether it has to be the same field as your work experience.
Also is there any way of getting your work experience recognized?

Hi guys, Ian and Candice here. funny coming across your post as we are in a similar situation as Ian also works for a Bank in a IT support position and has Microsoft qualifications and 15 years experience. We have confirmed that they don't even regonise the microsoft qualification but do recognise the years exp as this is in a short term skills area. About the years exp it has to be in the field you are appling under...i.e...it would have to be in building.
"Also is there any way of getting your work experience recognized?" regarding your question this would come from your reference letter from your current and past employers.
Ironically enough, I have a Diploma in Travel and tourism, but have not worked in the field for 10years, as I am now in Financial Planning with the bank...so I cannot use this either.
We have spoken to many people, and have come to the concusion that the only way we can do it is by Ian getting a Job offer and then applying for a work visa. I will then be able to apply for a work visa and our son (5years) will have to get a student visa. After being in employment in NZ for 3 months we could then apply for PR.
So at the moment we have been in contact with employment agencies and are waiting for a job offer.
Looking at moving to the Auckland area, as Ian's brother lives there. What area are you looking to move to.
Looking forwards to your reply and I hope this has answered most of your questions. :)
