Hello

May kids are 4 and 2 years, and none of them speak english. We have been in Germany, and my eldest son speaks a bit German, but never speaks English. (our mother tongue is Arabic).
Have any of you had such a case? and how long does it take to integrate in Kindergarten in NZ?
I am afraid, that he may face difficulties?

We know of a young Asian family who do not speak English at home and since their eldest daughter, age 5, attend the school here, she is able to understand and communicate with my Dutch hubby in simple English.

I find that young children pick up language pretty easy and quickly than adults.

I have lived in may countrie including Germany and have seen young people adapt quite well, it just suddenly erupts and they don't even know it. What I do know is the kids work in simpatico with their parents. They pick up all the nuances and typically the parents don't even know they are daffect therir kids.

My recomendation, and this aplies to any adopted country:
1. Speak the local language at home and especailly in public. It gets easier for both parties.
2. Elect to speak your heritage language at definitive times to keep it cureent; places of worship are good.
3. Try not to stand out from the locals in language, dress and deportment, kids can pick up on being "Different" and will be picked on from low-lifes at school or wherever

This will get the language juices flowing, by 6 they will be fuent! :nice1

Good luck! :nice1
