Hello,

I have got an offer to work as a UNIX sysadmin/programmer in Tauranga, they offer me a $50,000 a year contract.

I would like to know if that's enough to live GOOD for a single male ( I have to rent, etc... ) in Tauranga. They offer me after 3 months an upgrade to $55k . For what I have read the tax is almost 33% ... so if you could please tell me if with that salary I will be able to have a good (to very good) standard of living I would be very thankful.

Thanks in advance!

Tin Tin, welcome to the forum!! Don't know about prices there mate, but Tauranga is not the cheapest place to live I believe.
Don't think you'll do too bad with that salary though, seeing as you single. Good luck.

Is this right??? I thought it was 22%, or is that up to a certain level?

First 38000 tax deducted at 19.5%
38001-60000 33%
60001 upwards 39%

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.......theres a thread on this somewhere.........?

Julie

TinTin,

I was just wondering if this is a permanant position and the wage is 50k per year, or if its just a 1 year temporary contract?

Other Half says that 50K would be near the bottom end of what someone with 3-5yrs sys admin experience should be looking at.

On saying that - its all a matter of what is important. For example - do you need the job to get in to NZ, and have you looked at comparitive jobs and what they offer?

I know that doesnt actually address the issue of whether you could live well on it - but I was just a bit concerned. It does seem low for an IT job - but that just maybe my lack of knowledge.

Hello,

Avalon, yes for what I was reading it seems a low salary for an IT job ( I have 8 years of experience as sysadmin ).

I am from Argentina so it's very difficult for me to compare ( with the exchange rate and the prices of living here are much cheaper ).

I have a working holiday visa that is going to expire on Sept. and I really liked Tauranga when I was there last year.

They offered me an increase to $55k in three months, and I think ( not sure ) it's a permanent position.

Thanks to everyone!

It does look a little low, but not exceptionally so, and as it is outside one of the three main cities, that could be the reason. It also depends on the size of organisation and the scope of responsibilities.

I would take it anyway, get out there and see the possibilities, its always easier to find a better job when you're there is'nt it ?

You will take home around $3200 a month, and if you are not going to have a mortgage, or one over about $200k you should be OK as you are by yourself.

It is a low salary for the field, however its a way in, so take it! Hubby is in IT, he did 6 months with one company then moved for a 20% increase in salary. Although we are in Auckland, so a quick move may not be quite so easy for you.

Thanks a lot to everyone, I am taking the job and will see !

One last question, I will be going with my work & Holiday visa that expires on Sept when my future employer will make my work visa.... is that visa going to be "work visa to work for XX company?" , this is just in case that in the future I will be "tight to work for XX company" and if I don't like will not be able to change.

Thanks a lot again!
