Chatting the other day about how our youngest whos 2 will end up with a Kiwi accent, (Vic - mossum prompted this conversation after we met her) made me think about how I'm going to teach him to read.

Since the kiwis pronounce certain letters different to us, wondered how I'm going to manage to teach him the phonetic letter sounds.

Do they teach it differently to us?
Am I going to have to learn the phonetic alphabet again - 'kiwi' style?

Help - should I start learning now???

Hi... we moved to the USA when our youngest was 18 months and lived there till she was nearly 6 ... she learned to read with a good old Texas accent ... she didn't seem to notice that her teacher was pronouncing all the vowel sounds in a completley different way to her two British parents!!! ... she spoke with a 'good ole USA accent' when we returned to the UK but now has turned into a true Brit with not a trace of her American accent!!! .. all very weird!! ... don't think it makes any difference what you do ... they just pick up what they hear the most and that is with their peers at school!!!
