Hi everyone. I'm really enjoying reading about New Zealand on this great forum. It might seem like a strange first question but I was wondering if people in New Zealand queue for things like buses politely or if it's more of a scramble when they try to get in?

Welcome to the forum! :nice1

I can only say from the 3 weeks we spent there, but I don't remember anyone not queuing and waiting their turn. I'm sure it's like this country and you will get people who are rude but the majority are polite.

A little of topic but I remember being on our way to New Plymouth and there was an accident. We were in a traffic jam and everyone was really chilled. One man got out of his car and got a golf club from his boot, he then stood on the side of the road practicing his swing! Oh and a very nice fireman was walking up and down the queue of cars keeping everyone up to date with how long we were going to be stuck there! :laugh

Hi Viking

Welcome to the forum.

People 'queue' for buses in the CBD in wellington by standing around and along the pavement in places. When the bus comes along everyone moves forward and gets on, no pushing and shoving. There seems to be no lining up behind the bus stop there!

Otherwise queueing seems to be chilled out thing, without aggro IMO. I haven't experienced the great rush forward that sometimes happens.

Queue - what's one of those?! To be honest you don't queue as much here & people are generally polite.

People are generally laid back & not so much in a rush - something that might annoy you when you first arrive is the person at the till in a shop/bank will spend ages chatting to you or helping you out regardless of how long the queue is behind you!! It feels a bit embarrasing at first until you get used to it!

UUmm - No , not much would be the answer for me. Not unless directed to queue. Yis. Queues at supermarkets [ wots one o them] , the post shop etc but go into a cafe, cinema and form an orderly queue ? Nope. Thats a bit of a bun fight, similar to the NZ driving. No offence y'all out there.

We were coincidently in Welli looking around Te Papa on the first day Lord of the Rings exhibition opened. Strangely a 2hr queue for a museum exhibit caused a little upheaval but on the whole people more chilled than you'd expect in same scenario here...

Cheers,

Yogi.

Thanks for those responses. I'm reassured. I don't enjoy the scrambles to get on buses you sometimes get abroad and I hoped you wouldn't get this sort of thing in New Zealand. I've found the answers to a lot of my questions about New Zealand on this site without having to ask, but not that one. So thanks for setting my mind at ease.

In my experience, having worked at a supermarket in NZ, the queues aren't all that bad.. EXCEPT at christmas time... there's a reason it's called the "silly season" I worked at Pak n Save Whangarei when i was waiting on a "real" job after school, and the lines would be halfway down the isles with all 14 checkouts open, a week before Christmas... yikes!!

Spot on. NZ is inhabited by the human race. There's just the same amount of good/bad/polite/rude/ignorant/relaxed people here as anywhere else in the world.
