Some of you will know that my hubby is currently in NZ and has a two year work permit, some of you won't and some of you won't care. :laugh

After a bit of nagging  he finally found out from NZIS (they're only 2 doors down from his office for goodness sake) that I shouldn't enter NZ on a one-way ticket. :? I thought it would be simply a case of showing immigration a copy of his work permit and I would be OK. But I suppose we still have to prove the long-term relationship thing before they will give me a visa.

Anyway, I digress, my question is when filling in my landing card what do you think I should put.

a. Entering to be with husband
b. Entering to visit family
c. Tourist
d. None of the above

I suppose they might not be too pleased at NZIS if they think I have told porkies to immigration :angel - so I'm leaning towards a. Will this cause me hassle at immigration?? Can anybody offer advice please.

Thanks - Sandra

If you are asking them for a visitor visa on entry then put 'tourist' on your landing card. It's jumping through hoops but matches up with their robotic way of doing things. NZIS won't give a monkeys once you get to the stage of applying for a partnership visa. Immigration are the immediate concern! How are you handling the one-way ticket thing? Your landing card asks when you will be leaving the country, and you may well be asked for proof of this - i.e. an onward or return ticket. Oh, and get off the plane quick the queus at immigration can be horrible and even worse when you are stressnig about telling porkies! best luck.

Hi Sandra

We are also in the process of relocating via the work visa route. I have a offer for a permanent job. We were not sure how to handle a visa for my wife so we gave the NZ High Commission in Canada a call. We were advised by them that we should apply for a work visa for my wife as well. That way she could work if she wanted.

After our application was submitted they wanted our itinerary (one way only) before issuing our work visas.

Take Smoked Salmon!
Before you leave the UK, buy a vacuum pack of slamon to take with you, and upon getting to Auckland, join the foodstuffs to declare queue, which is about 10 times shorter than the other. When you show the officials the salmon, they'll say, "thats perfectly OK madam, welcome to New Zealand" then you skip through the doors way way ahead of the rest of the cattle!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I love smoked salmon too Rae - Pakeha Boy you are so wise and you make me :laugh

Ruthyroo & Peter: I've bought a return ticket after all - I considered the onward trip to OZ but couldn't be bothered fafffing about. I've had so much to do by myself since Dave went back to NZ in May - selling the house single handed, sorting out the shipment, sorting out what to keep and what to get rid off and finally sorting out the arrangements for exporting my cat. The added stress of having to mess about with tickets (even though I do work in a travel agents  ) and applying for a visa for myself would have just been too much. I decided to apply when I got there and Dave checked with NZIS in Palmerston North and they said it wasn't a problem.

This will make you laugh - after posting my question last night I dreamt that somebody on this forum read it and reported me to the police. They came screaming up to the house and arrested me and put me in prison for 39 days - very precise number of days. Isn't it peculiar the things that play on your mind :?

Smoked salmon and cool advice - I will pass that on to everyone who comes to visit!! We stood in the queue for over 3 hours becuase the Customs / Immigration desks were so poorly manned - this was after a 14 hour flight. Some welcome to the country that was.

Sandra - there comes a point where you just have to sort things out your own way, I found that just chucking money at things helped! Original advice holds though, put tourist on your landing card, get the 6 month visitor visa, and NZIS really won't care when you get to applying to them.
