Okay, so I feel a little bit silly for asking, but there's this 'special friend' who would like to come and stay in NZ with a view to a permanent relationship......
Trouble is, although she's a perfectly decent sort, she does not have the right qualifications and our age probably goes against us.... I'm expecting a long hard road to pull this off, but I'd really like her to get PR status and settle here with me. She's a U.S. citizen in her early 50's and I've been permanent for 20 years. Any thoughts on how to accentuate the positives would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi Taranaki - welcome to the forum. I don't know whether I'm going to be any use to you, but the only thing that springs to my mind is the family/partnership category.
To go down this route you need to be able to prove a genuine relationship for (I think) a minimum of 12 months.
I'm sure there will be others on here who can offer alternative advice.
If you have a look at the NZIS website it gives extensive information regarding criteria you have to meet for all the different categories/visas, it's worth scanning through the pages to see which 'rules and regulations' best apply to your situation.
Sorry I can't help further. Good luck and keep us posted.

How about bringing her over for a visit, and seeing if she can get a job in your town? She could get a work permit if she was offered a job, and it would be a start. I guess the answer is, yes! it is possible for her to come.
This page:
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/live/partner/canimovetonz/whatisrequired/
explains what requirements you need to meet. I think one of them is living together for 12 months. So it might be a while before you were ready to do the partnership residence path for her.
