Hi everyone, not sure if there is already a thread on this!!!

We intend to ship a Renault Laguna (02) plate in August, does anyone know the additional costs involved if vehicle has not been registered in your name for over 12 months? Also the customs costs in NZ? Can you pack goods in the car also?

Any advice!!!!

Thanks

Jemma

Hi Jemma

There are masses of threads on shipping vehicles. ;)

We were told we would be unable to pack stuff in the car by the Shippers, MAF and customs, so we didn't. TBO if you have a 40 ft container you will have plenty of room.

http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/ gives info on bringing a car in to NZ. I'm unsure of the cost if it has not been yours for 12 months though.

Check thoroughly to see if the car is compliant in NZ and will pass all it's brake certification, wof (mot) etc. Also keep copies of any emails etc with those agencies, pack them and bring them with you. Don't ship them with the car. You'll also need a receipt for the car from the UK garage.

You have to sign a declaration with Customs. This is free and the only bit that is. This means if you sell the car within 2 years you have to pay GST on the import value of the car (pro rata)

http://www.vtnz.co.nz/ might help too.

So to sum up, the car arrives here, you sign the Customs and MAF forms. There will be MAF inspection fees, they vary. The car has to be taken to a VTNZ station, tested and WOF'd and registered. You have to take it elsewhere to get the brakes certified. Thats about $3-400. They may ask you for a certificate from Renault in France too. (We were quoted $650 from Peugeot, I think )

Have you checked Trademe and dealers for replacement cost and checked out the cost of parts here too?

I'm sure I've missed something but hope that helps. :D

Since you haven't owned it for 12 months it looks like you will have to pay GST on the purchase price minus a % for depreciation. They also charge GST on the insurance and shipping costs.

Details here:-

I brought my Jag with me and put car related items (polish, oil, tools etc) in the boot. We also took down all of the lamp shades in the house at the last minute so they travelled in-side the car. I think it is ok to put the odd item in the car but I don't think you will be allowed to fill it up.

To be honest I looked into it and it was such as hassle to move our Peugeot I'm not bothering. Had a 20' container rather than a 40' one and saving shipping costs.

If it was a vintage Jag or other then maybe - but for a bog standard car you can get there - I don't think it's worth the trouble.

Have to agree. Looked at taking my MX5. Bought it new and it seemed such a waste of money to sell it. But when I looked into it, it seemed too much like hard work!

Hi, we looked into taking our Volvo, but it would have cost around £2500 and as its 4 years old with 90k on it, it really wasn't worth it.

Also looked at taking a new car with us and the only one we found that would give a couple of years "free" motoring (because of its second hand value) was Audi Avant A6 Quattro 3.0 Tdi, as its price in the UK is so much less than in NZ - at least it was earlier this year. But - we really don't need a car like that!

I would look at comparable costs of second hand or nearly new cars out there. On www.trademe.co.nz/motors or www.autotrader.co.nz as like for like they look cheaper to me. Good value seem to be the Jap cars such as Subaru, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi etc. European cars, seem to be dearer. ( all dependent on exchange rate around $3-£1.). But remember, if your going to work out there, the earnings to cost ratio is higher than here

Had a Subaru Legacy in the past and it never went wrong and was brilliant in the Peak District snow - (not that theres going to be much in Cambridge!), but a bit thirsty on fuel.
