Excellent question and I had no idea and never even thought about it before! Couldn't find anything online either, so I just rang the DVLA to ask:

They said (exact words) "You don't have to do anything!" She also said that when you get to NZ, and you take your NZ test, before they issue your new licence, they take your British one off you and return it to the DVLA in the UK. And, apparently, it doesn't matter that they will have an address for you that they can't contact you at.

They dont do this. You are still entitled to your UK licence. As of last week, you cannot drive on your UK licence here in NZ after 1 year (before that you technically may have got away with it,. But they certainly dont take your UK licence away. At least we still have ours - as do all our UK friends.

Also, typical of Beuracrats teh world over - we were toild that we had to write to DVLA and just inform them that we were emigrating. We did not have to give a forwarding address or anything.

They dont make life simple these people do they?

Ah, now I'm even more confused! I'll just play it by ear and see how I go! I don't plan on coming back to live, so if they need it, they can have it.

Speaking as a driving instructor, to the best of my knowledge, you don't have to tell the DVLA anything about your immigration plans.

It's your licence and you are entitled to keep/use it whether you reside (permanently or otherwise) in the UK or not.

The use of it in another country depends upon that individual countries laws and regulations.

I'm with Julie. It's your licence and you're entitled to keep it. Youdo not need to inform DVLA either.
