am hoping to go to NZ in sept for a 1 year working holiday. My wife who is 29 and my 2 littel kids are also comming. i am 31 so cant come on working holiday visa. Was thinking of comming on a 1 year work visa. I was told that we would all need medical which would be expensive. My question is can i come and work for one year and not have to have a medical? I will have a job offer as a nurse when i apply for my visa.

I think that you do not need medicals for less than one year, going by the info on this page

I would suggest though that you contact Immigration NZ and get a definite answer from them. Look at the Contact Us page on their website.
