Folks,
A silly question but on the below link, it says for flights from London to NZ via LA, that one can have 2 pieces upto to 23KG.
http://www.airnewzealand.co.uk/travelinfo/baggageinformation/check_in_baggage.htm
My question was that per person? i.e. as a couple are we entitled to 4 suitcases (2 cases each so 46KG each) with them being no more than 23KG each? Or is it 23KG for both pieces of luggage together?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I recently checked this wiith Air New Zealand as we wanted to bring over a load of dive gear.
As you're travelling via LA you can take two bags of up to 32Kgs each. If you don't fly via the States then it's a max of 20Kgs per bag.
Safe journey.

Its actually two cases per person, each of 23kg, therefore total 46kg per person, does not have to be exactly 23kg per case, as long as total does not exceed 46kg, and a single case does not weigh more than 32kg (thats the max for airplane baggage handlers)
We are doing the trip in a week to come back down, and we even get that allowance for our baby! (plenty of room for contraband like Walkers/Cadburys)
got an email from Air NZ to confirm this, but not on my own pc so cant copy it over....
You only get the two bags of 32 kg if you booked your tickets back in march, its just changed...

Unless your flying 'business premier' and then you still get the 32Kg :D

I checked with Air NZ a while ago before booking our tickets and they told us that the baggage allowance was 64kgs per ticket (therefore 32kg per bag). We did book our tickets before March so this may be the reason why it is now less allowance??

Yes thats right it changed about the 13th of March, but is valid for tickets booked prior to that. :clap

Has anyone tried speaking to Air NZ to see if their allowance can be increased when migrating? I'm flying BA to Sydney and can take 58kg each including hand luggage. The trouble I face now, is the Air NZ flight from Sydney to Auckland I can only take 25kg per person. Any advise on whether it's worth my while trying my luck and who best to speak to would be greatly appreciated.

Another quick question, my final destination is probably going to be Wellington which involves a change at Auckland to Wellington. So is the baggage allowance of the flight between Auckland -> Wellington still 2 cases per person upto 23KG, or do the domestic baggage allowances take over at this stage?
Cheers

I tried that, but they said they don't do it anymore as they offer the 2 x 23kg via the USA (which is the option we took).

I asked Air NZ that question. Because we purchased our tickets together i.e. (we got tickets from LHR through to Wellington, we ARE allowed the international baggage allowance on the domestic flight.
If you get your tickets separately, i.e. LHR to Auckland, then Auckland to Welly, then, you wouldn't be entitled to the international allowance.

As part of the Star Alliance, I think that Air NZ will allow additional bags and/or weight at a costly rate. We are planning to take one extra piece of luggage over our allotment of two checked pieces each as we are barely shipping anything.
As for changes between international and domestic, book the flights together as Dawn recommends. The international restrictions are applied to the domestic flights if booked together.
Cheers, Mark.

It's slightly complicated how I booked our flights. I used a combination of BA Miles with a "Companion Voucher" from AMEX. The voucher allows a second person to travel on the same flight & class as a booking made with BA Miles but only on BA flights and not codeshare so hence Sydney and not NZ. As BA don't fly in NZ I thought I might as well just use up all the BA Miles and travel in style not thinking about luggage problems on the final leg :uhoh
I suppose cargo from Sydney is an option but it's the hassle of arranging it out there. I just hoped that someone had sweet talked their way to an increased allowance in the past giving me hope to do the same.
